Picked up an FN Hi Power from AIM Surplus for $455 after shipping.  Overall, I was pleased with the condition upon receipt.  The bore had me worried at first, but cleaned up bright and sharp with some scrubbing and JB Bore Bright.

Cleaned all the fouling out of her, removed the magazine safety and lanyard ring assembly, and filed/stoned/emery'ed the import markings off the dust cover.

Took it to a buddy's shop and bead blasted the slide, frame, and barrel, so that I could better see what I've got.  I'm even happier with the condition now that I can see it better.

The plan is:
Tritium front sight, black serrated rear
C&S ignition parts
Remove rib on top of slide
Stipple top of slide, front strap, and back strap
VZ Grips 320 grips in black
IonBond DLC all parts

Great gun.
I got 2 Belgium made ones from the 1970's and wouldn't trade or sell them.
I hate the mag safety to.

Looks good in the white.  Can't wait to see the end result of this project.

Do you have any problem with hammer bite on the HP? they bite me like crazy.

what kind of serrated rear sight are you thinking about? something that fits the original dovetail or one that you have to mill the slide?

Saw a picture of a beat up Hi Power that was resurrected by CZ Custom shop, yep, CZ.  For that one they used a Harrison rear sight.  Looked pretty good.

The Harrison read sight looks like the ticket, that's exactly what I wanted.

They do bite me, but I didn't want to do the built-up beavertail.   C&S makes a "no-bite" hammer, thought I'd try it.   http://www.cylinder-slide.com/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=prodshow&ref=CS0197

Haven't made up my mind 100% yet on the beavertail/no beavertail.

Agreed on the beavertail.  It totally eliminate hammer bites but it takes away from that traditional HP look.  I hope the C&S no bite hammer will take care of you, I'd like to handle it when your project is done.

What about the thumb safety? the factory one is too flat, I can't get a positive contact with it.

Haven't decided on the safety yet, either.   I don't have issues with the factory safeties.   I don't mind the idea of the wider C&S ambi-safety; I don't see me CCW'ing this.   It will be a range toy and something I run from time-to-time when I'm teaching classes.

With the big beavertail, the HP starts to look like a CZ or something.    I'd prefer not to do it.

You got something against CZ?

I am considering doing the same project.

Looking forward to seeing how yours turns out.

CMShoot,

Please stop with these projects.  You already have me thinking that $2300 scopes with $500 bases are not only reasonable, but necessary.  Now you have me interested in getting custom work done for pistols that I don't own.  I am impressionable and drawn to shiny things.  You are killing me.

Seriously.  I have a beater HiPower in the safe and now I'm thinking of the things I could do to make it better (such as adjustments to the feeding so it'll take a wider variety of ammunition).

I need to get off my can and send mine into Jim Garthwaite.

I just want my hammer to look closer to a full 1911 spur instead
of a bad circumcision.

I have small hands and never been bit.

I have a very aggressive high-hand grip.  Stock BHP's and USGI 1911's bite the crap out of me.

Yeah, I can't shoot Walther PPK/Makarov type pistols due to my grip and hand size.  Shame, since I have two CZ-82's I picked up a few years ago, but they're safe queens right now.

Forgot about the PPK!  Those bite the hell out of me, too.

You notice that the current PPK and PPK/S have longer beavertail to eliminate hammer bite.

I guess those old PPK never bothered Bond, James Bond. :)

I've noticed that.  I had an older, blued PPK and it bit me.  I bought my wife a newer, stainless steel PPK/S and it didn't bite me.

As a long time Bond fan, I've always wanted a PPK.
