GF and I moved here in April.

My employer is offering to contribute (approx $400/mo) to my health insurance expenses but does not offer coverage through the company... so that leaves us to shop for ourselves and we don't know where to begin.

GF and I are obviously not married but live together and share everything like a married couple would.
Can we both get coverage under one policy ? We each have a kid here also.

We are both 47 years old, non smokers. Kids are 9 and 16.

Advice ?

Call several different companies and shop around, united healthcare, CIGNA, Blue Cross, Aetna , etc. also hate to say this but check healthcare.gov.we've had to do this so last couple of years for my wife and it's gotten ridiculous pricewise. Her plan through the exchanges is going up 50% next year premiums. She's young and healthy, we are seriously considering dropping the insurance for next year, putting money in a health savings account and just pay the stupid fine when tax time rolls around.

Avoid Humana, they suck balls in a huge way.

Don't use Coventry.

I had them, but when obamacare hit I lost my plan even though "if you like your plan, you can keep it". Not to mention my new "affordable" care act compliant plan increased my bill by 200%. I went outside of my employer because it was less expensive, not I use my employers insurance which is BCBS, its not great either

In addition to getting direct quotes, try to find an agent.

I'll throw out another agent - my brother & I have both been using Gregg Mahoney for about 10 years or so. Very pleased with him, hates Obama & Obamacare. Unfortunately my insurance provider is "getting out of the health insurance" business, so now I have to shop again instead of renewing my plan that "I liked so I could keep it" which had been grandfathered in. Oh well, this is gonna cost me a fortune, but it with two small kids I can't NOT have insurance.

Here's Gregg's info:

Has anyone heard of or used Liberty Healthshare?  My wife got a quote from them and they were less than half of our current Aetna plan. We got word that our incredibally expensive plan is going up 20%. It's a grand a month now. Going up to 1200

"F" that.
