Well, after 205k miles and being driven by my son with practically no fluid, my '94 Jeep transmission died. Put it in drive and it will barely crawl while revving the engine.

It's a Torqueflite 999. Reading around it seems it's one of the simpler units to rebuild. I'm pretty good with a wrench and do a lot of my own repair work on my vehicles and I'm thinking of tackling the job.

I really don't have the money to buy a reman unit or pay somebody else to do it. I think I can buy a rebuild kit and a shop manual and handle it myself.

Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated.

Notice I didn't say "tranny".

I joke that I can be an expert on anything in 15 minutes thanks to youtube, but it is a tremendous resource.

GACop, good luck on the project. Be interested to see pics if you do it.

I wouldn't even redo it. If you are reasonably certain that it ran when junked ( blown engine, totaled in an accident), unbolt the old and bolt in the new. If it works, great. If not, rebuild the one now sitting on your garage floor.

Tf999 was in the wrangler right?  check pull a part and see if any are in stock. If not call lkq they have a pick your own now too.

Southern gear is good for remans if not.

Although ideally you should swap the over drive aw4 from the Cherokee XJ in there. It's a great swap and very easy.

No way I'd rebuild, unless you were just wanting to learn...Jeep auto transmissions are easily found in just about every salvage yard, and should be cheap.

I didn't realize there was much difference in the auto trans between the Cherokees and Wranglers.

There's the actually. Two for wrangled and the Cherokee has one. The Cherokee is an Aw4 with an over drive. Fairly easy swap,

Yeah hard to find many parts for my 2001 wrangler to.
My tranny has a 140k on it now and expect I will get the 32h rebuilt next year maybe.
