New to Atlanta, coming from Texas. I used to live in North Carolina for ten years so Im not unfamiliar with the east coast. Not looking for anyones honey holes, but Im wondering what locations there are to hunt in and around Henry County, GA/South Atlanta? Again, not looking for anyones particular spots, just lakes, WMA's etc within an hour drive. Looking at getting a Cocker or Boykin for upland and waterfowl.

....I may be one of the oddballs around here as I don't hunt anymore, but if you're looking into WMAs, I've heard good things about the hunting at Big Lazer WMA in Talbot County....That would be in the neighborhood of an hour away plus or minus.....

...Oh, and welcome to Jaw-Ja.....

Do y'all have campus carry? We just passed both but universities can opt out (so its pointless) and Open Carry is sure to stir some shit up.

Yea TX gun laws are pretty awful considering we are economically conservative as hell, and our people honestly believe we should be (and we probably could be) independent

Im looking forward to Jaw-Ja

I am from San Antone, but I spent 4 years in College Station attending Texas A&M. What are some things I should know about hunting/gun laws in Atlanta?

I'm sure some of the folks closer to Hotlanta can give you better intel, but from out here in the sticks, we disowned anything inside the perimeter when they decided to become 'an international city' some years ago.....I mean, when you have to specify SWEET tea when you order in the South you know something is a half bubble off plumb.....

What do you want to know about gun laws? I think they are the same as Texas - campus carry and signs don't mean squat(some areas signs matter; restricted areas of that Airport, schools, .gov buildings). There are quite a few options for hunting the best is to have a friend who owns a lot of land. Unless you bow hunt the public woods will probably be full of people.

Some say we have campus carry, some say we done. Two laws passed the same session that would seem to conflict, regardless no one wants to be the rest case!

Open carry? You mean Texas differentiated between the two? Why that makes no sense. I'm sure blood will run in the streets....

Open carry

Georgia DOES NOT have Open Carry!  One can have a firearm in ones car or on ones own property, one may not carry openly elsewhere without a CWL so why bother to open carry if you have a CWL which is required to Open Carry (so might as well carry concealed). Saying Georgia has Open Cary is like saying Georgia has Concealed Carry without a CWL which it does not.

If there is a method and a mean to carry a gun openly, it has open carry. Open Carry = Licensed Open Carry.

Georgia has open carry.

Maybe not constitutional carry, but thats fine. Ill live.

We also don't have a CWL.... No such thing. It's called a Georgia weapons license, GWL.

Open carry with a GWL. No conditional carry.

Yes that is one way to look at it, BUT you never know who is reading the Forums IE it could be the new guy from Texas and he takes Open Carry to really mean Open Carry (nothing needed its just legal) and then gets busted for Open Carry because somebody said it is legal in Georgia when it REALLY isn't. One must be a permitted CWL holder and that is not really Open Carry. And I have to completely disagree that Licensed Open Carry equals Open Carry because it doesn't, furthermore there is no such thing as Licensed Open Carry. One can not go down to the county courthouse and get a License/Permit to Open Carry, one can only get a CWL. One is licensed to carry concealed, not open, which follows that if one can legally conceal a firearm, one should be allowed to openly carry a firearm if one has a current CWL (they passed a common sense law for once).

Additionally and more specific, to legally Carry in Georgia one must have a CWL (if one looks at it in the way that in your vehicle and on your own property isn't carrying, Fourth Amendment wise). So looking at it from the absolute need to have a CWL for anything but ones car or home, Georgia doesn't have Open Carry. Just about anywhere else requires a CWL so I would not call that Open Carry.

Can one carry openly in Georgia (notice I didn't say Open Carry in Georgia), yes but only if they are a licensed CWL holder, in their vehicle, or on their own property (and a few common sense places, gun range).

Where do you recommend to hunt?

The whole state is good; some areas better than others. Check out GON forum and magazine for more hunting info than you will get here. Rules and regs at DNR-WRD website.

Thanks for the info. I guess I also should have clarified - How are the WMA's southeast of ATL? Are the over hunted?

I don't hunt WMAs except the Ossabaw island quota hunt. I've killed a few deer in Oconee NF/Cedar creek back in the day. Expect competition and get far from roads.
