I just heard on WSB radio that up to 75 scientists at the CDC were exposed to live anthrax. Anybody have anything to add? I can't find it on the web yet.
How does something like that happen on such a large scale? |

How does something like that happen on such a large scale? Accidents happen quickly. Spill a container and the spray/dust gets into the air and boom... anthrax is bad but it's not the worst thing they deal with. Precautions are probably much lower than say Ebola I'd guess. |

More details out now. Sounds like a huge mistake was made, just hope it was just that, a mistake and not some sick minded disgruntled government employee or worse.

Got a good friend who works in that department. Some of you here know him. Praying he is okay. Mark I'm fine. I was in Saudi Arabia on an emergency MERS deployment when it happened. Ironically I received hazard pay while I was deployed. Funny how that worked out! |

Isn't anthrax treated and possibly cured if caught early with antibiotics? Yes. There is also a vaccine. http://www.cdc.gov/anthrax/medicalcare/prevention/antibiotics.html |

I've handled live anthrax a couple times, but not a weaponized version of it. That stuff is a nightmare, and it will get into everything. Where I was, they have a version that is in a liquid suspension. Keeps from having to replace the HVAC system I guess.
I've made entry into an IRS mailroom for a white powder call, but it wasn't a biological agent. I think it was some sort of silicate. One day, though, that place will get something. Last time we went, the IRS managed to mail themselves some hazardous materials, and freaked themselves out when they opened it. Origin and destination were the same mailroom. USPS returned to sender when the package started leaking. Geniuses, all of them. I've also done suspicious packages at the CDC, but it was in the lobby. That place and Yerkes can burn to the ground for all I care. |
