Ok... I am not new to the Ak but on the other hand I have no clue what is good and what is bad.
I am looking to get one that will not be a safe queen will be shot often mostly for fun but I do want decent accuracy.
I like the traditional look of wood and I also like the underfolder.
What should my price range be as I have seen them from 499 to 1,500

I prefer commie barrels and 7.62x39 . Also commie magazines . Look over in the ak section there is a wealth of information

Underfolders are not comfy on the face. Many wrap them in paracord.

O-PAP, Saiga or Vepr.  I would love to get the O-PAP, (the model with the bulged front trunnion and high cap magwel.)  The N-PAP is the regular flat front trunnion ak.   The Saiga's or Veprs will likely have to be converted but will have chrome lined bores.  The O-PAP doesn't have a chrome bore.  Stay away from anything assembled by Century Arms, what is imported by them is ok.

Centerfiresystems has the Saiga's for $499 http://centerfiresystems.com/SAI-762.aspx

Budsgunshop has the Yugo O-PAPs for $586 with free shipping http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/714007832

Haven't seen any Veprs lately at a good price.

Do you need it to maintain minute of bottle cap accuracy?

While were on the subject, any stores that stock AKs around West GA (and up to NW GA)?

Basically, the RUSSIAN stuff is the best.

The Russian satellite countries are second best. (i.e. Hungry, Poland...)

The rest is crap.

Key work being "look". I asked a question there a few weeks ago and got sarcastic responses and my thread locked.
I did have a helpful member IM me the answers I was looking for though.

God forbid you ask a question without knowing the answer though. Idiots.

IMO
underfolders are not very comfy
side folders awkward
pistols for giggles
762 is the better route
furniture can be changed out so keep that in mind when looking
milled is over rated but certainly nice and usually only found in the 900 - 1500 club
check the trapdoor for the original cleaning kit
pop the dust cover to double check the wear n tear - just so you are aware of the purchase condition. Nothing wrong with a little wear at all.
metal mags overall have been a much better fit.
expect to pay 600 - 800 these days for the lower end ones. Up to 1400 for higher end. Value is in the eye of the beholder though and I do not believe in safe queens myself. My personal fav is also the one I paid only 400 for back in 08 or 09.

Do not be surprised if your AK becomes your go to room cleaner.

I'm still a fan of the SAR-1 guns. They used to be had cheap. Also, when the romy g kits came out for $99 you could build a cheap rifle. I think for my Romy G I got $250 invested in it.

You can still find bulgarian kits out there and then buy a receiver and build(or get someone) it. Or I'd keep my eye out for a yugo underfolder or an Arsenal. Check the outdoors trader or GON for one, as sometimes people who actually know the value sell them for a good price.

To me Arsenal are good quality guns.
Yugo guns are pretty nice and a step up from romanian.
Other bulgarian guns run nicely and look good.
Romanian aren't finished as nicely but to me are still good shooters, and affordable.
If you can find a hungarian, from what I remember, they were just a step down from bulgy guns.

The Arsenal Inc's are outstanding AK's. I had one for years and really liked it.

Sold it and bought a SIG 556R.

Arsenal SLR or Saiga SGL. Both are excellent rifles.

Look for a used Vector.  That is a good middle of the road build.  Right at about 700 bucks or so.  Much more than that and you're squeezing blood from a turnip.  If you want to spend over 1k on an AK, just save your money, buy a pre-ban and let it sit in a box.  It's just an AK, dude.  Century is cheap, Arsenal is expensive - find the middle.

My buddy's Century was as reliable as my Arsenal Inc., but nowhere near it when it came to accuracy.  There is a reason that some AK's cost more than others.

Get a stamped receiver Arsenal SLR or a Arsenal/FIME/Saiga SGL. The only good AK folding stocks are the triangle and polymer side folders. The other AK folders (including the underfolders) are terrible. Stick to eastern bloc magazines. I prefer the 5.45 guns.

Just my two cents...The bulgy reputation was built on "the best we could get here"

My opinion the Saiga barrels and the polish/hungarian kits are superior fit/finish/potential to the bulgy guns/kits. The kit guns that are cobbled together in some guys garage and parked and cerakoted/gunkoted *CAN* be far superior to a factory arsenal gun in every aspect. I encourage folks to visit gunco, the ak forum, etc because there was a decade where really exciting kits were coming in that you'll never buy from a current manufacturer.

The arsenal guns are easier to buy because you know what you are getting in most cases. I'd spend another $200 and get it recoated professionally as that is the weakest link of any E Bloc AK.
