[ARCHIVED THREAD] - How did NorCal know? (Page 1 of 2)

ScottTennermanMD was banned today and thread locked.
NorCal said he was a previously banned member. None of us knew that. How did he know that? Do the Arfcom systems somehow track our IP address or something? I use two different systems to log in. So are both systems identified with my handle somehow? We don't have that many banned GA members to begin with that I can recall...... |

every post is logged via IP on every forum software I've ever worked with.
In addition the software automatically cross references and will tell you which users posted from the same IP in the past. It's fairly easy once a person comes to their attention for some reason. |
|
I suspect it's more than just IP tracking and cookies (I switch computers frequently, I'm sure I'm not the only one). I know many years ago on the talk.politics.guns Usenet group, one of the regular posters maintained a database of all posts made and ran textual analysis against it and identified numerous posters using multiple identities. |

One of the best bans ever Taxman was banned due to extracurricular activities if I recall. But tracking members and recognizing retreads is a lot more than just IP tracking (which is done). |

Like a few of the posters above mentioned, most large message boards operate the same way. Although the site is programmed from the ground up by Goatboy this site uses some pretty standard message board type utilities. While I am really not allowed to discuss site operation details, most of the above info is accurate. I will tell you site staff and moderators DO NOT have access to any type of personal, credit card or other information used by the store side. Sneaking back under a new name is a sure-fire way to get your account perma-locked. Some people operate under the assumption a proxy will make you invisible, which is not entirely accurate. Are there people here that can come back and remain undetected... sure. That said, most retreads I have dealt with fall right back into the pattern of conduct that got them banned in the first place... so sooner or later they get locked again. |

As a moderator for a science fiction publisher's webforums, the section in red is particularly accurate. Most people have habits, whether it be of speech, behavior, dress, etc... Identify those habits and you'll frequently easily spot them coming in under other names (we have some sections of our forums that are practically bait for some of the trolls we've encountered, they just can't resist posting in them). Oh, and we don't have multiple layers of review or a whole lot of second chances, if one of us bans you, your recourse is to ask the publisher to be let back in. She did that once and regretted it for a long time :-) |

I am relatively new though so perhaps you all had wild times prior to my arrival? Taxman does not ring a bell for example. |

I am just glad I didn't get conned into wasting time doing an avatar for the MFSOB... As a software guy, the electronic abilities are EXTENSIVE, and you would have to be VERY good to hide your identity. The tools go far beyond the few, well-known items listed here. A proxy (spoiler) is a relatively ineffective method, providing false security, at best...

Just a guess, whomever it was was restricted from the HTF. I figure it was one of our local cop bashers we haven't seen since the last round of dog shootings. Quoted:

I will tell you though that I was in time out one time for saying bad shit about Muslims and life was very lonely without my Arfcom account |
