| I bought a new car last december and I got a letter in the mail a few days ago from my county tax commissioner about the new title Ad Valorem tax. Anyone familiar with this? I went to the website and entered all of my information and it estimated that I would pay $95 and not pay the ad valorem tax again, currently paying about $240. Sounds too good to be true. |

The way that I read it was all newly acquired cars, new and used, after the initiation date get slapped with a set tax and no more ad volorem. Kinda sucks for people who want to sell cars from what I've gained from the lit out there.
ETA: http://onlinemvd.dor.ga.gov/TAP/faqs.aspx Effects cars bought march 2013 and newer. |

If you paid sales tax when you bought it, then that sounds about right. Sales tax paid on the new car will count towards the total title tax. Then from now on, you'll only pay the $20 tag fee, plus any special fees (vanity or special purpose plates), but no more ad valorem taxes every birthday. |

From the Dept. of Revenue website:
"Vehicles that are subject to the new title ad valorem tax will not be subject to sales and use tax or the annual ad valorem tax. Annual registration requirements still apply. Check with your local county tag office for details on emissions testing, mandatory insurance, and driver’s license requirements necessary to renew your tag by your expiration date." Does this only pertain to individual sales? |

I need to opt in. Just used the calculator and looks like I'll pay $0 !! We purchased a vehicle Feb 2012. This was useful to answer some questions. FAQ |

This is another way for the gov't to fuck you at the request of large dealers in the state. You have the option to opt out if you bought your car before March 2013. All private transfers are subject to tax, so when you buy that used car from an individual, get ready. They tried to push it by saying they are doing away with the B-day tax, which it does but the downside is worse. The taxes also go up every year for about 4 years. Every time you buy a car, get ready to pay up. it's also one of those taxes that is front end loaded, looks good for a year or 2 then everything goes south.
I swear I dont know why people dont follow this stuff and raise hell. I called my rep and told him how bad it was. He was even dumb enough to believe the BS. |

I just went to find I owed $800 for the silverado I just bought. They valued it at $11k, on a good day I'd get 8k. I went in expecting to pay around $400, I was pretty surprised! What's the blue book value? KBB lists it in excellent condition for $8796... |

It's funny , I have to pay 11k dealer retail tax cost on a vehicle I bought for $6500... |

Guess I know what I'll be doing on Friday. Is it based on what you had paid on your previous vehicle? Fair market value. I bought a ZJ for $1500, but had to pay tax on $2500. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile you can dispute the value iirc id think if you went by somewhere like carmax and got a written estimate of what they would pay you for your car you could probably use that as proof of a lesser value |
| It's true... the best thing you can do is "OPT IN".... and save yourself the cash...Anyone who purchased a car from Jan 2012 on forward can opt in and never pay ad valorem again on the opted in vehicle.... Also, remember that now, if you buy some thing from an individual, they will get you for tax on the fair market value per their guidebook when you go to tag it... as opposed to law before March 2013 where you didn't have to pay tax.... |
