Looking for a local (N Georgia or metro ATL) shop to strip the chrome from a set of 16" steel wheels.

Depending on what you are planning to do with them, the chrome can be etched or sanded then painted.

The correct way to get to bare metal will be chemical and will take an expensive setup

Try these folks in Austell: Eco Clean

I had them strip some metal parts a few years ago and they did a great job. Check out the "Thermal Fluidized Bed" video link. It is what I image hell looks like.

I'm wanting to have the wheels powder coated.  Talked to the powder coating shop.  They said since I have some pinpricks of rust through the chrome, I need to have the chrome stripped before coating.  They said if not, when they bead blast the wheels, it could stake flaking/chipping at the rust points.  So, if I decide to go ahead with powder coating, I have to have the chrome stripped first.

Chrome It

I found this shop searching the WWW in Marietta. Most chrome shops should have the ability to strip chrome since sometimes there are problems and the process must be redone. If you're going to powdercoat, a light blasting to etch the surface should be all you need provided your chrome is intact.

There are several folks out there who does powdercoating and sandblasting. I have my preferred "A-team" for jobs that need to be outstanding although there are sometimes that I use others for the commercial grade work.

Sounds like it might be an expensive proposition when all done. Will it be cheaper than buying an extra set of wheels?

I am looking to get into powder coating after reading the latest threads in the reloading forum

WGT, the person I talked to was Robin at Lithia Powder Coating.  I've got little pinpricks of rust on the wheels, so I guess the chrome is no longer intact.

Robin is good people...he's literally done tons of my work and has a batch of my Hummer parts that he's doing now.

Definitely sounded like he knew what he was talking about.  I wanted to keep the factory wheels, but it's looking to be more economical to buy new ones.

Plasti-Dip them! I Plasti-dipped my chrome rear bumper on my truck and it looks great and has held up perfectly. Very cheap at $6 a can.

Think I'll give the Plasti-Dip a try. If it doesn't work out, I'm not out much money.
