My sister in law just took the ASVAB and scored a 74.  She is looking at a 4-8 year commitment.

Her interests include
- music
- art
- writing
- hiking

She wants to have an "active" job and not something chained to a desk, however would like something that will provide skills for future jobs on the outside,

Do you have any suggestions on what to look at?

Would anyone be willing to speak with her via email or on the phone about her choices and your experiences?

I was never in the Navy.

I used to live in DC and I can tell you that if you have a clearance - secret or even better, top secret - you will never be out of work.

Look into the MCC - mass communication specialist rate.  Public Affairs to the rest of the DoD.  She'll learn photog, writing, journalistic writing, videography, interact with the media, support community relations and everyday there is something new to learn or do.

I was a CT, the wife was a DP (now called IT).  Not really active jobs when we were in.  Both jobs led to very successfull IT careers after EAOS.  My nephew is an active duty MC, Mass Communication Specialist.  Think photographer/reporter/etc.  His job can be very active, combat photographer comes to mind.  His rating (Navy term for MOS) is open to jump and dive school, which I have advised him to do.  Look at the credits for (forgive me, I'm mobile) that recent SEAL movie (not Zero Dark Thirty) at the end, the sub and jump scenes were filmed by active duty MC personnel.

Hope this helps.  For what it is worth, there is at least one active duty squid here that will have more current/better gouge than I.  I've been out 16 years.

Beat to the punch on MC.

First in the Navy we do not have MOS's we have ratings.  Everyone that signs up new has an 8 year contract, whether it is 4 active, 4 reserves or 4 IRR.  If she is in the fleet as an E-2/3 she will be quite active with watches and work parties regardless of rate.  With that said we are down sizing a lot like other services.  We have lost a lot of people due to PTS.  As we say choose your rate, choose your fate.  If she is interested in advancement she best check the latest CREO and look for an under manned rating.  Legalman is a good one at present for advancement.  I suppose it could translate well into the legal field in the outside world, like a paralegal etc.  Seabees are real active and translate well to civilian, but she probably isn't interested in construction down the road.  LS, logistics support are undermanned as well and assigned to every unit in the Navy.  This is a blended rate that used to be 2 or 3 different rates in the past.

Hospital corpsman, got me a job while in the service (uscg) and could have had a future in nursing if I had continued in that field.

My rating is long gone, but thinking outside and active other than what is listed above... Boatswain's Mate (BM), Signalman (SM),  Master at Arms. BM/SM - only civilian jobs would be as a merchant marine or tugs, MAA = cop. From what you've said of her interests, I'd suggest MC as others have done above.
