Looking at weekend/retirement cabins in this area.
Can anyone tell me about this area? Taxes? Crime? Cost of living? |
| You can get some real good deals up here right now. Property taxes aren't that bad but they are pretty high. Crime is pretty low, just typical meth heads in certain areas. If you've never heard of mountain time then it will he different. People do things when they want to so don't expect anything done in a timely manner! |
| You'll notice lots of people with odd looking foreheads and with eyes set too close together. No offense to anyone on this forum that might be from that area but I went to the Apple Festival up there around 10 years ago and it was eerie seeing that many people with the same physical traits. Seriously, 1-2% of the people I saw that day looked kind of like that boy on the porch from Deliverance. |

Our economy seems to be slightly picking up. We aren't a bunch of inbred hillbillies. There is a very nice private range up here and anything you need can be bought right here in town. |

I'm not making this up. I mentioned it to the person attending the event with me and they replied that they were thinking the same thing but were embarrassed to say anything about it. Maybe it was a few families at the event that demonstrated these physical traits, I don't know.
I'm not trying to knock Elijay. I love mountain biking in the area. I simply had to report what I saw. |

If you were at the Apple Festival, probably 90 percent of the folks were actually from out of the county. |

I have lived here my whole life and have only been to it once. When the apple festival comes to Ellijay all of the locals stay at home. |

I'll take your word for it as you are a resident and I was just a visitor to an event held there. |
| This is what Gilmer County used to be like.In the early 80's,I threw a rod on my truck outside of Ellijay on the old highway 5.There was an old gas station that looked closed down the road, but when I walked up you could see lots of foot traffic was going in and out of the building.I went in,it was your basic old country store. The guy let me use the phone, and asked how hot my walk had been.It was fucking hot.He motioned to an old roll top coke cooler, and said he had beer for sale.It had every kind you could imagine,if all you could imagine was Bud or PBR.Fifty cents each, and he pointed out he had jars of stronger drink under the counter.Just your average, friendly bootlegger.I went back several times on Sundays to buy from him,and it was a hour ride for me.Can you buy a single beer at the stores in Ellijay now? At one time, you could only buy a single if it was a quart size,no 12 or 16 ouncers. |
| Live in Ball Ground, shoot at River Bend (10 min North) and we have often considered Ellijay to get even further from the maddening crowds. People are nice, land is very affordable. Not much in the way of culture, but we already live in Ball Ground... Highly recommended to investigate. Find a well-recommended realtor to be your "buyer's agent" and have them do the property identification. They then take your side in the process, and the comm is split by the selling and the buyer's agents, so the cost is the same to you. If I were doing it, I would sacrifice the house size/quality in favor of getting as much land as possible. |
