Your Thoughts...

Do you think this just came out?

I like it....the newer version anyways....I'll put it on my SBR

ETA: On second thought, I would just opt for a stubbie VFG for a SBR....If i wanted a non-NFA railed midlength (i have no reason to own one) I would slap a AFG on it.

No... I know it has been out for a while now. I run VFG's and I was thinking of giving the AFG a shot. I have 2 middy's both with 11.5 rails.

Rifle length handguards I would put one on....mid or car length i'd opt for a stubbie VFG.

I've always wanted a "dissipator" rifle....16'' barrel, midlength gas system and rifle length handguards....and an AFG and BUIS. Badass little shooter

I have them on all my ARs to set them up the same.  The AFG2 is better than the AFG and works on rails that are smaller diameter like the LMTs and some of the LWRCs because they have less rail overhang.

I really like the way they feel and I use the Surefire rail mounted switches on my top rail and activate it with my thumb.  That combo works great with the AFG2s .

You will either love them or hate them.  Very few people are in the middle on them.  But they are very affordable, comfortable, and provide excellent ergonomics.

A solution looking for a problem. I've handled rifles with them, I don't get it. To each his own, I guess. If I get much more high-speed, low-drag, I'll slide out of the bed at night.

I like mine.  Hated it at first, but after some file and sandpaper work, it is the thing to use for me.

So true. I hate the Magpul grip... "Oh, hey, let me put my hand in my sight radius and hold my support hand waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy the fuck out on my handguard! "

I understand what they were going for, and used one when it came out. Found it takes up a lot of real estate and adds bulk. I like a handstop for long handguard rifles, or nothing at all.

It's cheap enough to try and will sell if you don't like it.. Watch splits from target to target. I personally think it's in the technique > tech.

As for technique, it's not like magpul invented the stuff. Go back to b&w vids of the feds training with thompsons and you'll see.... Ain't nothin new

Stubby VFG all the way.

I prefer to use a surefire 3 cell or stream light trl mounted all the way forward instead, wrap my finger in the space between the bezel and the barrel.

Allows me a modified hose/pull grip that negates upward bounce, and it has the added benefit of also being a light with the switch next to my thumb instead of having to run a pigtail somewhere.

I know guys that use 'em, love 'em and shoot very well with 'em, but you'll have to try it and see if it works for you.

They ain't my thang. I run a Tangodown Stubby but only use it as a hand stop, I don't grip it. I use a DD M4 V1, so I've mounted a Streamlight TLR at 12 o'clock in front of the front sight. With the Stubby, I have a forward grip and run it with the support thumb over the top to keep the muzzle down. This also puts my thumb at the rocker switch for the light. Since its a rocker, it's ambidextrous and I can run it equally well from either shoulder with either hand.

My first impression after buying an AFG2 was that a regular VFG is more stable.  I use a stubby VFG (Troy and Tango down) and hold the rifle the same as shown in the first pic.  It took much less effort to pull the rifle back into my shoulder pocket using the VFG.

That said, I have been experimenting without anything on the hand guard at all.  I've recently removed everything from my competition rifle and it's been just fine.  Of course it has a muzzle break on it so that makes recoil control a little more forgiving while still being able to maintain fast follow up shots and transitions.

Not saying you don't already know this, but rather add to the conversation at hand.  That method of shooting (with or without an AFG/ VFG) serves a specific purpose, and does so very well imo.  Is it necessary in all situations, no.  Will everyone like it, no.  Does it get the job done, yes.

When combined with an aggressive stance it provides an extremely stable platform that allows the shooter to to maintain positive control of the weapon, during extremely fast shooting and transitions.  You have to drive or run the gun in order to achieve sub 1/4 second shot-to-shot and target-to-target split times, if you want to hit where you're aiming.

Holding your hand further out on the hand guard and high on the bore axis is an example of some of the physics behind controlling recoil.

Here's a video that depicts running the gun with this type of hold:
