I listed a lawn mower on craigslist for sale. A guy local to me ends up buying it and writes me a check (i know, I know, I don't usually accept checks but whatever). I deposit the check two days later and noticed that it never cleared into my account when I checked my account couple days after that. I contact my bank and it seems that the guy put a stop payment on the check. So, now he has my mower and I have no money........for now. I've got all our messages prior to the sale and I have all his contact info. I predict that this won't end well for one of us

| I don't think you have "sort of" been ripped off. I think you have been ripped off. I wouldn't be as nice if I were you. If the guy had the sack to cancel the check, he is unlikely to respond to your emails. I hope the scumbag sits in jail. I can't stand a thief. |

| I would never deposit a check from somebody I didn't know into my account. When they get the return check, it has your bank account information on the back and they can clean you out. When I took creditor/debtor law my professor recommended it as a collection tactic to watch out for. |

Your a good man for giving he the benefit of doubt. Chances are he is up to know good and he has done this before. Curious if you have googled is name? |

Jace, why in the world would you accept a check from anyone off CraigsList??
I hope that it was a mistake, but there's a 99.9% chance it was a straight up scam. One of the local guys here traded a Jeep for a motorcycle with a guy off CL, and not only was the motorcycle stolen, but the trailer the guy brought to haul the Jeep back on was stolen as well. CL crooks have gotten ballsy, and its not just the Nigerians that are trying to rip folks off. |

I met up with him and he brought me cash, so all is well. I didn't even have to shoot his dog
