I picked up one in a trade last night.  I've wanted an AK for a while so I figured I'd go for it.

Anyway, it has a thumbhole stock on it and it's missing the rear sight leaf.  I'd really like to get a normal factory style wood stock and pistol grip for it.  What's the cheapest way to do that?  I'm seeing wood furniture sets online, but I'm not looking for some fancy $100 stock.  Also, where's a good place to pick up the rear sight leaf?  I looked around a little and saw some stuff with night sights and stuff but I'm looking for a parts-bin factory leaf.

I know nothing about these so I'm excited to dig into another platform.

You'll love your WASR. Don't believe the haters. Mine is a work horse and still going strong, although people tell me it's "luck" sometimes. :)

I've got an Arsenal Inc with an MSRP of over $900, one of my Instructors has the WASR. So far, his runs as well as mine, paid less than half for it.

I'm not afraid of it, just didn't want to spend much money so figured it'd be worth a shot.  The front sight is not canted as I've heard is a problem on some of these.  It is missing the rear sight so not much good there...  I checked the k-var site and they have a Bulgarian sight that goes to 800 meters.  I read online that the WASRs have 1000 meter sights on them.  Would it be totally off if I put an 800 meter site on it?  I'm assuming the mounting style is the same.

Right now I'd just like to find somebody's take-off stock and pistol grip.  This stock looks very similar to the ones that are on the MAK-90s.  If it were the Dragonov style that might be cool.  I just cant get over the look.  I wasn't going to pass up on the trade because of the stock though.

Picked up some Tula 7.62x39 from Walmart today.  Hopefully I can run a few through it this weekend.

I know for sure I have a  original butt stock from a Romanian kit you can have but don't know if I have a pistol grip.

Probably not, worst case senario would be setting it on 200m or 300m for zero

Yeah, I mean, at ranges much further than 200 - 300m it's "totally off" just cause it's an AK likely shooting cheap ammo. At least, as compared to an AR.

Lowtrac, if you get the buttstock from acmech1, I have the original pistol grip off my Arsenal Inc you can have.  I have the black plastic buttstock if ya need it, as well.

Thanks to acmech1, my WASR went from this :

to this:

I'm planning on putting some tung oil or something on the hand guards to try to match the finish of the stock and call it done.

If anyone needs a thumb hole stock, give me a shout.

one word of caution, make sure you didn't fall below the required 922(r) US made parts by swapping that out.  if that is an original pistol grip and not a US made one you might have.  the pistol grip is a cheap easy way to get a US made part on a rebuild.

ETA see if you can get the rubber recoil pad off and put it on the Romi-G stock.  while an AK doesn't kick that bad it is still nice to have a pad instead of that metal piece after a long day of shooting!

I do need to check on that.  I know right off hand that it has a Tapco slant brake and G2 trigger.  Tapco says the trigger counts as 3 parts and I need a total of 6 right?  They also say their mags count as 3 parts (follower, floorplate, body) so assuming the trigger and brake are my only US made parts and I only run Tapco mags I'm GTG?

I have always been leary of the mags.  at the range is someone swaps mags then you are out of compliance again.  and what if you have a surplus mag at your house?  are you out of compliance again????

you can swap the piston and the pistol grip super easy.  it was worth the extra security IMHO.

I've got a  US pistol grip you can have. Looks just like the one you have but it's black. I've got a matching US-made black buttstock you can have, as well. Come to think of it, I should have a matching black US-made forend you can have.

That laminate stock set you have looks really nice when you strip it, then refinish it. I put romyG wood on a SAR 2. I stripped it, and just coated it with linseed oil. Has a blonde look to it.
