This sucks!
I get internet through our local cable compay. I use their ISP based e-mail account for everything. Had this same email for years. Not that long ago they went from being a local company to an affiliate of Mediastream, but nothing really changed except the name on the bill. Kept my old email address. Just got an e-mail (ironic) informing that me that my Waycross Cable Co. email account will terminate on the 11th of July and I need to set up a Mediastream email account before then. I've got a lot going on (death of a family member, another having lung surgery tomorrow), so I'm already behind because I didn't check my email for a couple of days. I'm not sure how much of a hassle it is to change my email here, but multiply that times 87 other sites (some of which will be a real pain I'm sure) and you'll get some idea why I'm pissed. Not to mention all the people that have known my email off the top of their head for so many years. And I can't do anything today, it's already booked solid. |
|
You might want to consider using a Gmail or similar type account that would be very unlikely to change in the future and use that for websites etc and then forward it to your "main" account.
It has saved me hassle over time unless you see yourself staying with Mediastream forever. Either way I know it is a PITA. |

Get a gmail account and start using that instead of setting up the new one with your ISP. |
|
Check with the company and see if they will offer an email forwarder, or email alias, and have the mail from your old address sent to a new one. +1 on using something that does not depend on your isp. Gmail is GTG.
Most companies will do farwarders for you if they change stuff. |
| Gmail is read by Google and the government. No thanks!! I have my own domain that only costs a few dollars a month for unlimited storage and unlimited email addresses. Even if the ISP goes out of business, the domain is still yours and you can move it very easily. |

I think that's foolish. Email is not a private way of communicating. It a needle buried in a needle stack though. |

Most ISPs require search warrants to obtain your email and files held on your server. I use SSL encryption to and from my email server so it can't be sniffed. Google has an alliance with the government and freely gives them access to your google search history, email, and they target market you and read your emails to try and sell you things. None of this crap happens at my ISP. Besides, if someone finds a vulnerability into Googles mail servers, they can access all the accounts. There is much less of a chance someone will compromise a small ISP. If they do, my server belongs to me, and they would have to hack each virtual server one by one as there is no common front end like Google.
Plus, I own my own domain, and always will. I can guarantee my email will never change unless I want it to. With gmail, they could sell off their mail to another company and you will be screwed again. Quoted:

I have been in network security since the early 90s.. Say what you will, but you obviously don't know what YOU are talking about.

You really do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy when using Internet email.
The best you can manage, short of using an all-private infrastructure is to manage your own domains, manage your own MX records, and maintain your own private (non-shared) servers. In addition, all mail should be encrypted at the sending host, and only decrypted at the receiving host. SMTP hosts can be worked over to reject any mail communications that do not meet encryption requirements. Any time you are slinging a clear text message from any server, to another server across a public transport network, it is in the eyes of anyone who can be anywhere in the middle. Gmail is fine for everyday mail stuff. If you expect enhanced privacy, it requires considerably more effort than getting a godaddy account. Gmail advertising/link presentation is not done by humans, but by automation. Google also does vet user information requests from government and law enforcement organizations. Still, check with your ISP, and see if they will forward mail from your old address. Quite a few ISP's will do this either as a courtesy, or for a small monthly fee. Unless they are releasing the old email domain name, it is really no skin off their back to do so. |

Considering I'm a Network Engineer for Google. I kinda do.

If you do work for Google then you are out of the loop. Google announced last month that all search engine searches and google products will be monitored by the government. So how was what I said inaccurate when it came from your company?

I don't work for Google, but I do believe they index emails and searches to drive focused ad content.
For email, I use a domain I've owned since the 90s. I have blind forwarding enabled, so [email protected] comes to my "main" account. For example, when I have to provide an email for a forum, online purchase or other specific event, I just provide <specificeventkeyword>@mydomain.com. If and when I get spam from that address, I'll know who sold my information or had their system compromised, and I can just add that account to the blacklist to avoid getting any junk. |

Speaking as a .gov employee who has had to produce superior court (sometimes federal court) search warrants to MSN, Google, and Yahoo for email records and information I can say with 100% certainty that they require that kind of documentation before they turn over ANYTHING. They were all compliant, but I wouldn't classify any of them as helpful, and they certainly didn't give anything away freely. I dont work for the NSA, so i can't speak for them. |

After the 11th the original domain will not exist. I'm assuming that the new company has been keeping it active, but will no longer support it after then. I'm going to have to go with the flow on this, and I'm sure I'll get it all done in time, but I couldn't get it done this week. Family matters come first. Got one in the hospital and another in the funeral home to deal with. |
