Picked this up today from my grandmother. According to her it has been stored since my granfathers death in 1996, he apparently acquired from his father. Here are the pertinent markings:

SN # 23XXX (IN AT LEAST 4 PLACES I CAN FIND)
Cylinder is marked with PAT SEPT 10th 1856 (is a 5 shot cylinder)
On frame just below cylinder "COLT PATENT"
Top of Barrel is marked with ADDRESS CCL OR OCL SAM COLT NEW-YORK US AMERICA
Marked .36 just above the trigger guard
"7" marked on left side of trigger guard

Attached are a few pics anyone tell me what I have and maybe a date and an insurable worth (Dont want to sell it)

I can't really help with any info besides telling you to contact the Colt Historical Society. They should be able to give you all the Info for it. Might cost a little for the info. I bet it has a few cool stories behind it.

Appears to be a Colt .36 Navy, designed by Sam Colt in the 1840's, approx. 250,000 total production.  Very collectable unless it has been screwed with, (no steel wool).

Collectors gave it the Navy name, most were used by land forces and civilians through the civil war and after.

Screws are washed out and grips have been refinished which will hurt the value.

You also need to vertify if it's a genuine Colt. Countless reproductions have been manufactured over the last 60 year.

Yes...i want it verified for sure. Colts Historical Site says it cannot give me information on it because of the serial number range. The grips were def refinished by grandad, he liked to tinker. I'll leave it (the finish) the way it is. Anyone know who can "authenticate" this pistol? Also, anyone have an idea on insurable value?

And kill any value it has.
