The Aquarium is great as is the WWII Musem. There are lots of good shops along the edge of the Frenck Quarter near the Riverwalk as well as GREAT food.
Thet have the buggy tours of the French Quarter also at Jackson Square. If you are into basketball, see if the Hornets are in town also.

Just a few suggestions. Have a great time.

I am not a paranoid person as a matter of fact I probably should work to improve my situational awareness.

That said, I have traveled to many cities inside the US as well as outside the Country and NO is the only place I've ever been where my Spidey senses were constantly in overdrive. Nothing happened but it felt like I was being watched/stalked the entire time I was there.

Just watch your ass and be safe no matter what you do while in NO.

TD who will not go back to NO

Wen usually end up at the WWII (Higgens) Museum or just walking around the Quarter. The "best" place to eat brunch or dinner is Commander's Palace, but it's a little pricey.

I've heard the ghost tour in the quarter is good to do at night and there's a tour of some of the older Antebellum homes outside the city.

WWII museum is a must, plan on an entire day.
Take the Saint Louis Cathedral tour.
The zoo is good, the aquarium...eh.
There are some national historic sites and markers, take in the history.
Take one of the walking ghost tours at night.  It's a great way to learn some of the city's history and see some really cool stuff.

Don't go past Lafeit's if you're in the quarter after dark.
You're good to go walking from the convention center to French Market.
The trolley is good to go.

Commander's is great, but Brennan's has a better brunch.
Mother's if phenomenal for lunch, but show up early, lines tend to go around the block on the weekend.
Johnny's Po'Boy's are rated #2 in La, they also do a pretty dang good breakfast.
Central Grocery at the entrance of the French Market is the home of the original Muffuletta sandwich...get one, but be early, line is normally around the block by about 11.

The music scene is endless. Just bounce in and out of the bars and don't discount the local talent.  You can likely catch some well known talents playing some dive with no advertising.

I just went to N.O. last week for the first time-  I had a lot of expectations, some of which were pretty negative.  In the end, I really didn't feel uncomfortable at all and I can't wait to go back.  My wife and I spent a lot of time walking all over the french quarter and we didn't hit any bad spots.  They are there, but you don't really happen upon them without warning.  The places I liked were mostly in the French Quarter but away from Bourbon St., which is filled with both local and tourist idiots.  Maison on Frenchman is a great music bar- try to catch the Smoking Time Jazz Band if they are playing.  Cafe Du Monde is neat, and if you don't eat well in the Quarter, you're blind.  The Ruby Slipper was awesome for breakfast (coffee pancakes), and if you have a car and don't want to wait 2 hours for brunch, try Mondo.  I liked the older areas of New Orleans a lot-  nothing feels new and artificial.  It all feels old and authentic.  It's not a clean city, but it isn't a filthy shit-hole either.  Since money is tight with the new shop up and running, I took Greyhound from Norcross to N.O.  I'd say that was the worst part of the trip.  My wife walked to the bus terminal to meet me in the morning and she didn't have any problems.

Cafe du Monde is a tourist right of passage but the saddest day I had is when they closed the Dunkin Donuts 1/2 block before it.  It was the last stop for good coffee before you got there
