I am starting to build myself a new AR. i picked up a stripped lower at the gun show the other day and I have decided tp build me a varmit rifle.  I just started coyote hunting and wont to tailor this weapon to doing that  may also hunt deer with it but that would be its only other function other than punching holes in paper.  I am not sure what I want beyond that.

I have built lowers up before but never an upper I am not sure if it is any harder or even worth the effort or should i just pick up a complete upper assembly.  I am also torn between a full bull barrel or just an hbar flutes or no flutes holy crap the options are mind boggling.

Anyways what are your thoughts on the perfect varmit/ hunting AR   and lets see some pics of your rigs with details and what u would change now that u have it and have used it.

Thanks for the input

If you are planning on building an upper, do yourself a favor and buy beg borrow or steal an action block

Other than that it's (for the most part) no harder than doing a lower

If you don't have the tools to do it yourself, and don't plan to build enough to make it worth getting the tools, I'd either get a prebuilt upper or talk to Bookhound or one of the other dealers on here who has experience doing that about having them build one to your specs.  Personally, I'm not the happiest with the throw weight of 5.56mm for hunting, so I have a 16" 6.8 SPC II barrel on order, but I'm also looking at a 6.5 Grendel for 4-800 yard shooting.  The beauty of the AR-15 is I can have one lower (with nice trigger) and multiple uppers in different configurations.  Of course, with the PSA $49.95 lower sale recently, I currently have ALMOST enough lowers for an infantry squad, so don't really need to swap uppers, my problems is I don't have enough uppers :-)

I can't provide much input on the upper itself, but as someone who just built his first AR pistol (waiting for my form 1) I agree 100%.  An action block is an absolute must!  I'd also say armors tool and punch set is a must.  No way I could have built mine without serious issues without either.  You'll spend less than $100 on the tools, and you'd be VERY glad you did.

Other than an action block and barrel nut wrench what is required.  I have a no problems buying tools they are my other addiction  :-) .

I'm not dead set on .223 either just has to fit standard lower is the only requirment.  Like i said this rig is going to be mostly for yotes will probally never see a tree stand but then again one never really knows.  I really dont hunt anywhere with more than a 300 yard shot.  Most of my kills have been under 75 yards well all have but one deer just over 150.

I used this thread here to create my tool list.  But the only things I needed to buy that wasn't already in my tool box was the action block, punch set and the armorer's wrench.

If you don't have them, a small hammer (along with a big one I found out) is helpful for the gas block tubes. There's some front sight blocks too, but I just used scrap 2x4's that I'd drilled for the tubes and it worked just fine.

Uppers are pretty easy to build, if you have the right tools.  The tools are likely to run you at least 50 bucks if you already have a solid bench vise, so if you are just doing one, it's probably not worth it to buy them.

You can get away without some of the tools, some of the times, but there could be that magic time that you crush or twist a receiver.

Unless you want something really weird, it actually might not be worth it to build, over just buying an upper.
