Apparently my kids clicked something on the home computer and it started a virus called Vista Anti Virus 2012 and it locked it up good.  It has some other names for Win 7 and XP, but it's the same thing.  Removing the crap now and it is a pain.  Just letting y'all know, it can be removed at home, especially if you have another PC to download the fix files.  Computer virus makers make me sick. Bleepingcomputer.com has been a real help.

Another reminder....constantly back-up your files.

You got that right.  Doing that now and running Malwarebytes to remove the virus.  Just got the PC back running and programs open.

Its a pain but not to bad to get rid of.  Just control+alt+delete and close the process (you have to watch the cpu usage and you can tell which one it is)  once thats done you can access system restore with out it buggering up on you.

Not with this one.  All exe files only trigger the virus to copy itself.  IE and Firefox don't load, any anti virus you have won't open either.  System Restore will not start, even task manager will not load.  Like I said the virus blocks all exe's from starting and then it just copies itself any time you try and start a program, to try and save itself.  This one sucks bad.

This sounds like the one I had a couple months ago. It was a Rogue 'anti-virus' called Windows XP anti virus. Like you said, it locks up everything. Each time you click on any program the fake anti virus program pops up. I struggled with it for two days to try and remove it and finally took the laptop to a computer pro. $50.00 later it was up and running. He told me that 90% of the computer problems he sees is Spyware and to keep a good spyware program and malware program.

Combo-fix
malwarebytes
Ccleaner
Avast-Free

all are on a thumb drive for this reason. It never amazes me how many people fall into this crap.

I have malwarebytes and ccleaner on this particular pc, but with my 7 yr old clicking something, who knows.  The damn thing was buried, Malwarebytes has been running for an hour and 15, scanned over 240K files and finally found it.

I know what you're talking about, shuts down your access so you can hardly even fix it.

Yeah, who knows what your child clicked. Glad it was fixed though.

I have family members who fall for the fake anti-viral all the time.

Malwarebytes is good.
Comodo Firewall and others.
Spybot

Not sure how I feel about AVG anymore, but it's free along with the others.

Update often, run scans whenever you're leaving the house for a minute.

Even after all that, we still have computers that get viruses sometimes.

Yeah that one sucks.  The bad thing is that it can be embedded into a webpage, and will self install if you visit it.  The Fallout Wiki was notorious for this.

I was able to get to it with safe boot

I had it happen to me on Christmas Eve, i was on the Barnes & Noble website clicked to look at a book and could n't do anything else.  Make sure you clean the Registry so it doesn't download again. I was up until 5:00 am Christmas morning removing it.

I was going to do safe mode but got the laptop out and downloaded everything to remove it and loaded the flashdrive. Took about 2 or 3 hours this morning to get it all fixed. Just sucks to have to waste time essentially. Glad my pc fu was working because I really wasn't in the mood.

sounds like the aleuronE virus my kids got by clicking on something that looked like a virus warning.

MS Security Essential could detect it but not remove it. same with malwarebytes. Kasspersky could only quarantine it. not even running the recovery disc could get rid of it - the entire hard drive had to be wiped and everything reloaded.

Sucks you had to wipe the HDD.  Thankfully I didn't have to do that, as I didn't have any Vista disks at home, and the process I used to fix it worked perfectly.

That's a completely different virus, and I don't think anyone has found a fix for it yet.

I was waiting for this comment. When Mac's have more than 5.11% of the market share, you will see viruses targeted at them.

Sales for 2009
Mac 11.2 Million vs. Windows Based 300 Million.

Now, if you were creating a virus, who would you target?

Now Macs do serve a purpose for a ton of things, but Facebook and surfing the web do not necessitate use of a Mac. You just paid 10x the price.

Sadly the wife unit doesn't get it.  Just spent 1300 on a new MacBook Pro, her old MacBook got the logic board fried through one of our critters dumping a glass of milk on it.  I tried to steer her to the $500 refurb MacBook with Lion already installed, but no had to have the new MacBook Pro.

IMHO the only thing Mac has going for it is customer service, that's it.

ETA:  There's nothing special about Mac hardware, except for the fact there's no right touchpad button (drives me up the damn wall!).  You can very easily take a Windows machine, load up Mac OS, and boom you have a Mac, and the "Mac experience."
