Wife calls me at work. "Your son picked out a dog at the shelter." "Small, terrier mix, black-ish, quiet, obedient, spayed, about 3 yr old etc."
Whaaaa? Click. They brought it home. I had a few hours to prep myself for this and after a few crown black mixers I was ready to accept that the boy is ready for his little buddy..... Yes it is small. Like a skinny coon. A cat could eat this thing. It has no known purpose.... Not a terrier. Yes, black-ish. I am thinking more like a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Quiet unless it is whining or barking which occurred ..... not too bad though. Admit. Not obedient. NOT obedient even in the least. And jumps. Hate that. Yes, spayed, like yesterday. and that is why they thought it was quiet and obedient - it was drugged up. Not 3 ish. More like 9 months or so. And stinks like hell. Gag stench. Fromunda cheese stench. Bathed it and it still stinks. Bleach the tub from orbit stench. Pissed on the carpet. That was the camel pumper there. F that. No time for a pissin stink puppy. Too old for that crap. Goes back Friday. Anyone know who might have an older dog that needs a home? It's time we get a dog again but we prefer older quiet house broken dogs of the larger type; lab, shepard, etc. |

I would keep the dog. I'm all about adoptions. We adopted a sheltie a few years ago. He was a breeder at a puppy mill, so he was kept in a kennel for the majority of his life. It took literally about a year and a half to house break him. We got so frustrated. He was terrified to death of people when we first got him. He would chew everything, piss everywhere, etc. The worst was crate training him. Since he was kept in a kennel, he only knew small areas. We'd take him out, he wouldn't pee, but once he was back in his crate he would piss or shit. I would get so mad. I got to my breaking point, but my wife convinced me to keep him. Eventually we just kept him outside in the yard for a week and he for some reason learned to go outside. He's turned into an awesome dog. Very loyal, follows me around, and always wants to play.
Just have patience. Your reward will only be as big as the work you put into it. Make sure you have lots of treats to give when it does good. Also, don't be afraid to smack the shit out of it. It she pees inside, smack her , then get her outside, and when she finishes, give her a treat. My sheltie stunk to high heaven. Took about 5 baths to get the stench out. I'm happy with my decision. We adopted a Husky too about 5 years ago. She's a good dog, but a typical husky. Only does something if its in her best interest. |

Not obedient. NOT obedient even in the least. And jumps. Hate that. That can be fixed. It just takes time and patience. I let my daughter pick out a pup from the shelter when she was 5. She found a tiny black lab pup. Female. Best damn dog I've ever had. Now the daughter is in college and the dog is laying at my feet. She's a lot slower, deaf, and half blind, but she still likes to play and she's still got a lot of spirit. I say run with it. You may be surprised. At the very least you should give it a good try. Your son will appreciate that you had faith in his decision, and he will learn from your patience and determination. Az |

I understand. BoyWonder and I picked up a lap dog at the shelter, Dachsund/Cocker Mix. She was so adorable. The only problem was that she would get excited and pee.
You would say her name, she pee'd. You pet her, she pee'd. We put her on bladder control meds, she pee'd. It got to the point that she was being ignored because no one wanted to wipe up the pee or strip the couch cushion. The bottom line is if the dog is not a good fit, its not a good fit. Good luck. You will find a dog that can truly become a member of your family. |

Wife woke up real early hearing the dog whine and took it outside.
I guess nothing happened and once back inside the dog crapped on the carpet. That was it for the wife. She returned it to the shelter this morning before I woke up. We are too old to raise a puppy. Did it twice and know the process. I had a wonderful shepard for 15 years when I was a kid and then we had a lab mix for the last 16 years that was essentially our kid. So, we are in the market if y'all happen to see one. We might hit up the shelters again in a few days. |
