I scored a great deal on a regular savage 10fp from a guy on another board about 5 years ago. I replaced the stock with a HS precision, added a warne 20moa mount, some TPS low rings, and a SS 20x40. I shopped on a budget, and with the gun and everything have about 1100 in it.  I love the gun to death. It will stack federal GMM 168s, and also loves the 175s. Its a pleasure to shoot. Mine hates 150g ball though. Throws it all over the place.

I have a Savage 10FP that I have rebarreled with a Broughton barrel. My only criticism is the feeding is not nearly as robust as others and the factory stocks are marginal. The 10FPs I have had were purchased used for about $450. It looks like those are in the $700 range and I would have a tendency to spend a few hundred more and get the threaded 700 5R. Not because I think it's exponentially better, but with the savage you'll end up being about there if you buy a better stock.

Either way, you will be pleased.

Like most all the Savages, I'm sure it will shoot very well.

Personally, I would not get one with Savage's proprietary factory detachable box magazine.  Get a standard model, upgrade the stock, then have a DBM kit from CDI Precision installed that will allow you to use AI magazines.  WAAAAAY better mag.......much more robust and reliable, not to mention you can get 'em in 5 and 10rd capacities, if you are so inclined.

I would recommend the standard 10FP, 10 Precision Carbine, or 10FP-SR.  As soon as possible, upgrade the stock.  Sometime after that , upgrade the bottom metal to CDI Precision and you're set.

If you really like the one in the pic, get it and upgrade the stock later.

I bought a model 10 Precision Carbine in .223 about three months ago.  I love it so far

Humm the savage DBM is the reason I am not going with the Remington 700... Why do you not reccomend the savage DBM ?
Also this will be my first "precision .308" and I am in no way a marksman yet but this will be a start...

Question: It is a 24" fluted heavy barrel with a factory muzzle brake. Can you replace it with an AAC brake later on and could it be cut down to 20" and re threaded if I choose to do so ?

I'd be more than willing to bet you can

You can't cut the barrel down to the flutes and thread over the flutes. Won't work. If you get one that is not fluted, then you can do it.

Any suggestions ? I was looking for a 20" .308 "7.62x51" threaded ( for suppressor later ) a good precision stock, vortex viper pst and caldwell bipod

Are these still around : SAVAGE 10pc 5r

Update: found a 10pc5r @ buds but I wont buy it from them I guess I will call 400 Friday...

The 20" threaded Rem 700 5r fits your bill perfect if its in your budget and 400 J&L, Cherokee, etc normally stock them.

I would go with what robpiat suggested.  I've had numerous of those 20" threaded Rem700 5R's come through my classes, and one of my buddies shoots one.  They all shoot great.

The threaded one is 20". Thats what I like since the can adds quite a bit, but its up to you. I am getting 2500 FPS with 208 Gr bullets out of a 20" so I wouldn't say velocity potential is an issue.
