Anybody know anything about these Daewoos.  Good , bad , whatever...

I shot 'em in South korea when I trained with the ROK Marines.  They were select-fire models with side-folding stocks.  Didn't really do a ton of shooting, or any kind of clinical tests, just plinkin' for the most part.  I remember them as being good shooting rifles, and they ran very clean.

I believe they all have a 1:12" twist rate.

Here's a link for parts:  http://www.cncwarrior.com/comersus/store/comersus_listItems.asp?idCategory=56

The DR-200 was 1/12 and was imported with a thumbhole stock, but you could get a side folder conversion.  Now, there is a model (K1 I believe) that was imported with the side folder, which IIRC had a 1/7 twist barrel.  These are a little harder to find, and are typically a lot more pricey.  I can remember when DR-200s where a hard sell, and you could find them all day long for $500-600.  Now, it seems you can't find one for under $800 or so!

I am a big fan of the DR-200, and have owned a couple of them.  They shoot very well, and are extremely reliable.  Parts can be somewhat tricky, and I ultimately parted with mine simply because I couldn't shoot heavier ammo.

Finding the parts for them is the tricky issue.

If you are patient you can find one for 500 or less with the original thumbhole stock...there are a number of aftermarket stocks for them now, skeleton, skeleton folder, six position,etc....as for parts there are at least three different places to get everything from springs and firing pins to barreled uppers with 1:7 twist....and they are great shooters, piston and very clean...i've had one since 1994 and nothing on it has ever broken.

Speaking of Daewoo rifles.... Anyone seen a K1a1 for sale local? I've been on the hunt for near 3 years for one. My little brother is actually adopted from South Korea and I want his first rifle I buy him to be a K1a1 (Our dad beat me to buying him an AR).

K1A1 rilfes are hard to find. Saw one at the Columbus show for $1200 in camo. Mine I will never sell.

but, but, but..... I thought we were friends....

I don't blame you. I had a Kimber imported DR300 years ago. great rifle. But as stated above, i feel it would hold a certain sentimental value with my brother to have a k1a1.

Here is the thing. Had one years ago - cool but someone flashed big bucks at me so it was gone. Found another - wife loved it. One day she opened the safe and asked me what happended to HER Daewoo?
So this one stays.

Here's how I modified mine with help from some locals.

Bookhound - Supplied the M4-2000 & BlackOut mount (in a past life).
Gazaway Machine & Tool - Did the cutting & threading.

I had this thing sitting in the safe since 1995 when I purchased it new. Since it was a post ban import,
it had several non-desireable features like a heavy & ugly thumb hole stock & fake flash hider. However,
since it's piston driven & had a 4 position gas regulator, I figured it would be a good host for suppression.

Some people have called it the first piston driven AR, I'm not sure about that. It's a cross between an AR &
AK. It uses a full length piston rod that attaches to the AR like bolt where the gas key normally sits. It's
chambered for .223 & takes AR mags.  It's 1:12 twist so nothing over 55 gr.   So I -

-  Had the barrel cut to 16.5" from 18.3" and threaded.

-  Installed a BlackOut flash suppressor/mount.

-  Cut the fully enclosed front sight hood to make it "HK style" so it doesn't interfere w/the optic.

-  Installed a Strormwerkz optic rail.

-  Put on an Ace skeleton folder. In order to maintain 922(r) compliance, the kit came with an
USA made trigger, disconnector & hammer. The FCG is identical to an AR. An AR mag
counts as 3 made in USA parts.

-  Mounted a Bushnell Trophy 1x32 T-dot.

That's cool -

A 'Woo with rails.  Pretty rare.

I'll probably put a smaller/lighter optic on mine when funds permit.

I sold my K-1 during the awb for almost 3 times what I paid . It was very accurate and shockingly reliable. great gun.
