Well that was fun! Nice small group and everyone I talked to was very nice. Mostly the same guys from the basic course. My relic strangely shot cold-bore an inch to the right, rather than the inch to the left it shot cold-bore last time...hmmm...If you are being held hostage and I show up you'd better hope you are 100 yards or less from me or things might get chancy. From there we got 100 yard zeroes, and I think most folks ended up dialing some negative dope for starters. This got progressively worse the farther out things went, thus proving the odd, but clearly true, statement that more humid air has less drag. At any rate there was no arguing that the dope from the beginners class was shooting too high today. 1 minute is 1 minute is 1 minute, but still things got harder the further out we went. My troubles started at 300. With 350 and 400 also causing me fits. Fortunately I was furiously scribbling notes about todays dope as we went out, since the shootout basically used this data. This was likely the difference in the shootout, and not necessarily my skill vs the other shooters. Still, a fancy customized rear bag is probably in my future...I wonder what I will get on it? I put the can on and dialed in estimated dope with it for the 400 yard steel, hit it first go and interestingly it had less deviation than it normally does at 100 (only 1 minute windage needed rather than 3). A few folks then shot some binary ahem at 100 yards with it. I think Shep forgot to shoot it again...or did you Shep? Very hot, I went thru 6 bottles of water minimum. But no rain hit us...I drove through a bunch on the way home. Thanks Shep! and I look forward to seeing the rest of you at local matches. |

I've got a pretty bad sunburn... On just the backs of my legs!! I kind of chuckled when I saw it... Lessons learned today, your dope can change way more than you expect it to from changes in temp.. My dope was easily 2moa off the last class a month ago.. and it got worse as the day went on... Other lesson learned.... Sun screen on the back of your legs is a good idea when you are a pasty white IT guy.
I'd love to see some pics... Hope there is an advanced class..... In the fall when it cools down! |

Great shootin', stimpy! Your prize has been ordered and will be shipped to your home address. It was interesting that the student that spent the most time with his data book is the one that won....quite possibly a corellary there!
I had a great time and it was great seeing y'all again. Shooting consistent 1MOA and better at various ranges can be very difficult. You realize quite quickly that unless you are CONSISTENT and pay attention to your fundamentals, it ain't ever gonna happen! It was good for folks to see the effects of weather changes on their dope. That is one of the many reasons that the data book is so important. Semper Fi! |
