All,
Here is the official announcement for the Handgun Fundamentals course on Sunday, June 26th at the South Fulton County Range located near the airport. This course will focus on the fundamentals necessary to safely, effectively, and efficiently operate a handgun. While a handgun fundamentals course is not the most exciting or high-speed course, it’s exactly the types of skills everyone needs to address. I mean really, how hard is it to shoot a pistol accurately? Put the sight on the target and pull a 5lb. trigger without disturbing the sights, doesn’t sound too difficult right? Yeah, I think we all know better than that. High level competition shooters will shoot 30,000 + rounds per year trying to make this happen. It’s been said before in different contexts, but it all comes back to fundamentals. This course is designed to take the novice shooter and expose them to the basic concepts and techniques of shooting a handgun. It will also refine some of the techniques of more experienced shooters. I like doing these types of courses because even though you will be on a line with other shooters, I can bring each shooter along at whatever speed they need. The novice shooters will get plenty of technique driven instruction and the experienced shooters will get some suggestions for increasing their performance through technical refinements and time-based performance drills. Each shooter will progress at your own pace….with the occasional push from me. Some of the techniques covered in the course: -Practical applications of the primary firearm safety rules -The Fundamentals of Shooting (Stance, Grip, Sight Picture, Sight Alignment, etc.) -Performance trigger manipulations for Speed, Precision, and Fighting requirements -Recoil management theories -Mechanics of Speed Shooting -Mechanics of the Drawstroke -Reload techniques (Emergency & Tactical) -Administrative malfunction clearance technique -Strong hand/Weak hand shooting techniques Course requirements A safe and reliable semi-automatic pistol, chambered somewhere in between a 9mm and a 45acp. (I prefer to stay away from .380’s or calibers outside of these limits, but I will consider requests for unique handguns on a case by case basis. Please contact me prior to the course to discuss your selection for suitability.) A minimum of 3 hi-capacity magazines (12+ rd. capacities) or 5 single-stack magazines. Remember, this is the minimum requirement; I would bring more if you have them. A strong side hip, belt mounted holster or a IWB holster. Yes, you can use a Blackhawk SERPA, but no paddle holsters. Holster must be attached to your belt. Magazine pouches (enough to hold the minimum magazine requirements) appropriate for your style of handgun. A strong belt capable of supporting all of your war gear. No dress belts. 400 rounds of ammunition. Eye & Ear protection, additionally I strongly recommend some type of baseball cap. Pen & paper for taking notes. Cost of course is $125, due at registration on the morning of the course. Course max is 20 students. Directions to range Take exit #2 (Camp Creek Pkwy/ ATL Airport) off I-285. Turn away from the airport; you'll want to drive past a shopping complex with a Target store followed shortly by another complex with a BJ's Wholesale and a Lowe's. Stay on Camp Creek pkwy for approximately 3-4 miles. When you come to the intersection of CCP and Butner road, make a left turn. Drive another 1/2 mile and make a right turn on Aldredge road. Drive about 100 yards and you'll see a dirt road with a gate. Enter the complex. In another 50 yards or so you'll see a dirt road on your right that climbs up a slight incline. Take that road and it will bring you to the range. Starting time is 8:30 am. Please make plans to arrive around 8:00 am for registration and gear up time. Training day will last from 8:30 am-5pm with 30 mins for lunch. Please plan on bringing a lunch with you. As always, please inform me ASAP if you are unable to attend the course. I do not require deposits to hold your slot, BUT short of a catastrophic event or a death in the family, if you have requested a slot in the course I expect you to show. See you guys soon. I apologize for the late posting. Events beyond my control prevented me from posting the annoucement any sooner. I regret any difficulties the late posting may have caused and I will endeavor to see that all who are interested in the course are able to attend.

Like larue said...I'm in as well as Shep's class
a note on belts....i dont have a "war belt". I have a CQC which I train with constantly (never had a problem) and a strong Dickies belt (which also works perfectly). This is my daily carry rig, so i'd like to use it..... can you make an exception for the belt? Its not a super thin tux belt or anything.... |

Myself and Msheresy will have to regretfully withdraw from the course. We are covered up with vet bills right now and need all funds going in that direction for the time being. Sorry for the inconvienience.
I hope someone will quickly jump on our slots, Erik and Todd are great instructors. Missing two classes in a row because of this really bites! Duty to mans best friend calls tho. |

my guess would be that they are prone to being pulled out with the draw of a pistol. the belt attachment prevents this.
Yep, this is the reason...and it wasn't a stupid question, it was a very good one. Paddle holsters are convenient to slip on and off, but I have seen far too many lose or break their belt attachment points resulting in the pistol being presented to the target while still in it's holster. I'd like to avoid this if possible. USSA-1 |

I've been using a comp tac paddle for range work, IDPA, and USPSA for better part of 10 years now. I've yet to have anything even close to that happen or seen it. It kind of caught me by surprise. Is is a perticular brand that is doing it alot? I will say i've seen and helped a lot of people using paddles that have them on wrong, or are wearing a cheap belt. (i've also seen no belt.........) Never actually seen one come off though. |
Looking like it's only going to be 90 degrees and storming

Hot and wet is not so bad. Rainy and cold....sucks beyond belief. Y'all bring it. Don't let a little summer shower keep you away. So long as the lightning and tornadoes stay away....we'll be fine. Somehow Tod, I bet you have had classes in all kinds of weather. Y'all have fun!!
Last Saturday at our hunting club we were trying to shoot clays as a storm blew in. The wind will really make those clays dance. ![]()
