I am ditching DSL and moving to cable internet. Do any of ya'll have a cable modem (Docsis 2.0 or 3.0) that you want to get rid of? I really don't want to give Comcast $7 per month for a $50 modem.

I am putting up the old speeds and will re-post when I get the cable modem hooked up.

This thread has kind of been hijacked, but in a very interesting way.

On my wife's crappy little netbook and with a refurbed Docsis 2.0 modem. Quite an improvement. Calling ATT now to tell them to kiss my ass.

I feel your pain and I'm in Athens.  Charter didn't run any lines in our neighborhood so DSL is my only choice.

Why don't you like your DSL? When I had it, I was running 6 mbps DSL from ATT. It was rock steady (I never detected an outage) over 4 years of use. I am on 10 hours a day for work with additional mucho messing around on the evenings and weekends. Plus there was no download cap like with Cumcast's "Unlimited Access".

might as well get uverse once you get it installed it awesome my speeds are 17 up(paying for 18)(Up is only 1.5 paying for1.5)
but if you are already signed up you might want to check best buy last i checked they had them(if you want a new one)

The front half of my subdivision has Uverse, but they never installed it in the back half. I keep calling and they keep promising a return call and resolution, but after 3 months of back and forth, I am done.

Are the Surfboard modems worth a damn? I see a lot of them on Ebay, but assumed that they suck since so many are available.

Cool. Let me know the brand and model and that should tell me if it will work with Xfinity or not.

I love Internap. Much, much better to deal with than any other ISP. I love being able to call their NOC and speak w/ someone who has a clue about networking. I even call them when we are having issues with our other ISP to ask questions or verify my findings.

We have multiple 200Mb/s Metro Es serving our East of the MIssissippi Offices. I NEVER get anything like that when I test. I'm visiting the office where those things are terminated some time soon. I'll have to try from there early one morning.

I have heard that with cable modem, the more people on your branch of the cable that are on, the slower it gets.

Don't know if it's true, but I can see it since it's a common feed as opposed to DSL.

I don't see that manifesting itself. I used to do a lot of legal torrents. It was common to have 10Mbs throughputs for days at a time.

Okay.  Just something that several folks on cable modems had told me, but it could have been for other reasons.

With DSL, you get line speed from your house to the DSLAM, but after that you're sharing bandwidth on the uplinks from the DSLAM to your service provider's network.  If/when the links or the CPU/Memory get saturated on the DSLAM your service is gonna suck. I had to dump DSL a couple of years ago because it became unusable from 3-8PM. Packet loss would go from 0% before 3 to 50% or higher around 5 or 6 PM. I had an AT&T tech come out, which of course was during the day when there were no problems. He admitted that their service was over subscribed in my area. He said that there were no plans to upgrade the service, so it made it an easy choice for me. He did suggest to me that since I had IFITL DSL, that I could go with DSL lite and get the same shitty service for less money.

Anybody that has IFITL DSL, you might want to switch to DSL lite if you haven't already and potentially save yourself $10/month. The equipment used by the IFITL DSL doesn't have the ability to police your usage rates.

Same can be true for the CMTS with cable modems. If your area is oversubscribed, you service is gonna suck at peak times.

I'm enjoying Comcast. They've been pretty reliable.

Througput looks OK but the ping looks high... it's higher than your old connection. Did you run more than one test to see if it was a flyer?

Yes, I ran about 8 tests on two different test sites. Consistently got the same reading.

Now, I ran a few tonight and the pings were around 5 and the speeds were about 15-17mbs. More traffic in the evenings, I'm sure.
