What do I look for in the bags of components for tannerite. I know some of it is coated etc so it doesn't work well. I am putting together a shoot in Michigan so I am going to try to find it up there.

The two components are Ammonium Nitrate and Aluminum powder.  However, most stores only sell Urea Nitrate which won't work for tannerite.   The Ammonium Nitrate is very controlled  due to it being a component to make improvised explosives.   Usually you need to be in agriculture to obtain it in any quantity without throwing up red flags and potentially being investigated.

While attending a meeting with the director of the ATF, I asked him about Tannerite's legality.  He said that binary explosives like Tannerite are legal in component form.  But if you mix it, you have to shoot it, as storing the mixture pre-mixed is illegal and a federal crime.  So make sure you mix it onsite prior to shooting it and not keep it pre-mixed in your car, home, etc.

If you can get the components, take lots of video!

...I still don't understand why this guy as charged with anything if no one got hurt and the debris stayed on his property.

Sounds like he has a poor lawyer. Seems like a "We just got to charge him with something"

This is one of those things where the law is on your side, but a jury likely wouldn't be.
