Since we have a small house and the kids are home schooled, I normally only wfh 1 day a week. Here are some things I really like about it though:
1. Had breakfast with the wife and kids 2. daughter makes me a picture, gives me a hug and tells me she loves me 3. wife brings me coffee just the way I like it 4. slept in an extra hour 5. didn't have to go out in the rain today (yet) When I'm on conference call later, I'll prolly not like it so much. |

I can work from home, and sometimes it is great. Other times, it is hard for my wife to actually give me separation. She'll come in and ask me to watch the baby or our 3yo for "a few minutes". Makes it hard sometimes to actually work. I do find though that I get more done when I work from home when they are out and about. I get a lot of interruptions in the office.

| My job is 100% from home, my wife also has a salon in the basement. I have my own office that is isolated complete with TV, reloading bench, beer fridge, and XBOX. Working from home is freaking awesome. It makes it easy on her to have me around if needed and with a 2 year old, and another on the way I know its only going to get busier. |

Dan I'm with you on the getting more done. I get a lot of "drive by" requests from people stopping by my cube. |

HEAR HEAR. just got a transfer to a position that is 100% remote. about to buy 20 acres in AL and move out there. This is exactly what I want to do, the only thing holding me back selling the house I'm in. Also my wife has to be within 20 minutes or so of a populated shopping area.

Worked great before kids, not so great with kids under 6, works OK now the kids are in school.
I also had the stay-at-home wife try to drop the kids in my lap so she could take a shower (a 1-2 hour event), go grocery shopping or otherwise escape for her mental stability while I was working. She would get miffed when I told her no, but seemed perfectly happy with me commuting an hour away to do the same thing. I think she saw working from home as goofing off, which it isn't. I get a more done in the office between 7am and 8am precisely because there are no distractions. |

Wow, talk about a 5 (or 30) min power break! Office/ man cave! What kind of work do you all do that allows you to work from home the majority of the time? |

Help desk for an accounting software package. Every employee works from home. Best part is that its either busy or dead, and if I have phone and internet (smart phone) I can work from anywhere. I plan on working from the pool a lot this summer. |

I'm an internal IT network engineer for a large company. My manager doesn't care where we work from as long as the work gets done. I don't think he really cares what hours we work either. I have teammates on the East Coast, West Coast and in Bangalore, India. It is almost always working hours for someone on my team M-F. I get to expense my home internet access, and the company pays for my cell phone service and unlimited data plan. edited to keep the grammar nazis at bay |

I've worked at home for about ten years. I have a graphic design/advertising studio and like working at home most days. It's great that I'm around for small stuff that comes up around the house and saves money because i don't have much of an overhead.
The bad part of it is sometimes it feels like I'm always stuck in the house constantly and really need to get out for dinner or whatever. Working in downtown ATL at a big agency is a great way to get burned out. |

I really hope I can land a job that will allow me to work at home after I graduate but we'll see. At this point, I'll take about any job I can get. is tough i started working for small networking company that specialized in providing telecommuting services to other companies. of course i worked at home, as i've been lucky enough to do for the last 15+ years. that company was eventually merged with what is now megapath and was merged recently with covad. my boss is in costa mesa so obviously i dont go into the office. i have a substantial setup of services and networks though, t1, ADSL and EVDO, and a bunch of computers. i like it. im not married though so nothing gets in the way of me working. also i like my job so its easy to sit down and work. over the years though i've found that lots of folks dont take to working from home for a number of reasons. they need or want to get out and away from the house. the kids will bother you while you try to work. your wife will bother you while you work. if you dont like your job, its easy to slack off. you get little or no contact with folks that you would if you worked in an office. also you'll find that you are expected to work more hours. my boss is on west coast time. so at 5 pm his time its 8pm my time. something comes up, he calls. for me this is not an issue because im basically permanently wired into everything. i can watch tv, movies or browse the internet on one system while i work or check email or get calls. but for many folks this is an issue. especially if you are married you'll find the wife gets mad if your boss calls you 'after hours'. and you'll often find the company just assumes you are going to work more and can always get you 'at work'. because it so easy for me, i work weekends to take care of things i couldnt during the week. however, i dont fight traffic, i dont have to have a bunch of clothes dry-cleaned, i dont drive a lot, use gas. and i can work from literally anywhere as long as i have an internet connection. i had a small construction company that i ran for a while before the real estate crash and i kept a laptop connected to work via EVDO in my car when i was at the work site. one other thing. if you go looking for a home working job, its often because you are expected to be on the road 80 to 100 percent of the time and also the jobs pay less. |
