Does anyone have information about the GBI? I'm thinking about applying for an internship for the summer. I'm not a criminal justice major, but part of my major has to do with cyber crime and computer forensics, and my minor might turn into criminal justice.
I tried googleling some stuff but I mostly got things from 2005 and there wasn't much information there. I appreciate the help. |

I hope you've never done any drugs before. That was a requirement last I checked. So if you smoked a doob or two as a kid you are SOL. Nope, never done anything illegal. I have a scrip for Adderall, but I only take that when I feel like I need it. Man, what a square. Just kidding. Just make sure you let them know on the application what meds you are prescribed, especially something like that which is an amphetamine. I'm not sure how LE's look at that drug, even though its prescribed. When you do the polygraph, don't lie, because everything is about honor and integrity. |

I may or may not have done anything illegal or legal, just nothing to do with drugs.
I'm pretty open about it, while I do think it helps, I'm not dependent on it or anything. The polygraph is what I'm worried about, I saw that Bullshit episode about it and how the person giving the test can get the answer that they want if they ask the right questions. Granted, they were talking about people hiring polygraphs for cheating spouses and criminals. |

If your into cyber crime and computer forensics I suggest someone else entirely... NSA. Or Department of Homeland Security and work for the United States-Computer Emergency Response Team. FBI also has a huge need for geeks in the field. So does the Army and DoD. We (the Army) have a huge need for cyber investigators and we've actually established a new unit called the "Army Network Warfare Battalion". Google away |

ADA would be all over their ass. When I applied for a job out of college I was thinking about it as well. As long as you have a script your OK. |

Where are you going to school? The NSA has CIS interships, Secure Works (managed security services provider) in Norcross has two internships available as well. http://www.secureworks.com/company/career/index.html?location=Atlanta& Do you have any experience in the business so far? Feel free to PM me if you like, I might be able to throw some good advice your way. eta: I see you are going to Kennesaw, that's good enough, they have a pretty good rep for security. As others mentioned, the FBI is typically recruiting cyber guys as well, there's a good bit of IT Security work in ATL, all across the spectrum, go search "Indeed" to get an idea of whats going on here. |
| If you are even considering a Federal Law Enforcement job (with anyone) get your applications in as soon as possible. Most agencies are expecting budget cuts over the next few years and hiring freezes are likely. Plus it can take up to a few years to actually start an academy somewhere so getting started early is never a bad idea. |

Thanks for the help guys. I have been thinking about the FBI as well, but I figured it would be a little more competitive and that maybe a degree from Kennesaw State might not meet their standards. Very much incorrect. Federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies (to include the Dept of Defense) do not really care about where your degree comes from. That time has come and gone and they look to reach out, especially with computers. They know their best candidates won't come from MIT... why? Because most MIT grads can get jobs that pay far better in the private sector so a few may come from the fancy and well known technical schools and Ivy League colleges but the meat of the workforce comes from flyover country |

This was in the early 80s. NSA supposedly had stuff 10 to 15 years ahead of public sector. at the time they were only interested in hiring doctors of computer science or math and wanted me to come to dc and take some language skills aptitude tests which was an area i wasnt interested in and the pay was not enough anyway. |

Good luck. It cracks me up every time I see the polygraph mentioned. Never understood basing employment, ect... on junk science. There's a reason serial killers and lots of bad people can pass them. Oh ye of little faith... they pass them because they are the few bits of humanity that have no emotional reaction to traumatic events or accusations. You could tell a baby you're going to punch him in the face and he's likely to giggle at you because he doesn't know any better. Well a psychopath is the same way, they lack empathy. As for polygraph, they are very useful in hiring practices. Used them on Americans, Iraqs, and Afghans... those who had something to hide were discovered and we eventually found out what it was and those that didn't got through and got a job. |

Wow. Thanks for the links, I really appreciate it. I'll check them out tonight. No, I don't have any experience in the field, which is why I'm looking into internships. Quoted:

I love KSU and I think they have strong programs but sometimes I think we get looked over because of UGA, GT, and GSU. I know no one from my high school had any clue of KSU. Quoted:

They do have computer forensics classes, IIRC it's one of my major electives that I plan on taking. Most of the ISA majors already have jobs in the field so the classes are at night, around 8pm, or they are offered online. I really do appreciate all the help you guys are giving me, it's really great. I now have a nice stack of papers to give to career services next week. |
