I want to change the sights on my G36, but am a little confused by what will fit it.

Different sight makers are listing it differently.

Examples:

Williams Fire Sights lists all Glocks as the same.

HiViz lists all 9mm, .40, and .357 Glocks as one sight (6.5mm tall) and all 10mm and .45 Glocks as a different one (6.9mm tall)

Heine lists all Glocks except 36 as one sight and 36 as its own sight for the Slant Pro or Straight 8, but for their traditional they just list "Glocks".

Advantage Tactical lists all the Glocks by number except for the 36 (G36 is not mentioned at all) as taking the same sight.

Meprolight shows one sight for 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23. Another for 20, 21, 29, 30, and 36. And they list a third for 26 and 27

Does my G36 take a special sight?

Yes....the 36 needs a special front sight. The sight height is not important as they will all work on all models. Standard model sights work just fine on the large frames. But the 36 is different in the way the front sight attaches. The screw is smaller and flatter. Its not a sight height issue.

The factory rear sight height varies based on model, caliber, etc.  Front sight height is the same.
Manual shows the 36 normally comes with rear sights that are 6.9mm high.  Same as the 20, 20c, 29, 21, 21c, 30, 31, 31c, 32, and 32c.  It should have a marking on the side of the rear sight with a small line over a larger line.

There are different rear sight heights. But I have found that they will work just fine and interchange amongst different models. I actually use the 6.9mm sights on all my standard frame guns and POA/POI is fine.

I completely agree.  First instinct was to say put the new sights on and learn how it shoots, but I figured I'd give all the info I can.

The important thing on the 36 is that it needs a special screw to attach the special front sight since the slide is thinner in that area where a normal Glock front sight will not work. The 36 uses a standard size slide with a big bore 45 barrel. There is a clearance issue there.

A side note. Several folks that carry the 30sf Glock desire to pair up the 36 slide to the 30 frame. Makes for a neat carry setup if you are a big bore lover.

Not sure if you knew this or not but if you take it to the glock factory is smyrna you can buy them there and have them installed while you wait. It was a little over $50 for all the ones I have taken there.  They will also do any upgrades to it that need to be done and completely clean it for you. I took a G32 police trade in to them and they not only installed sights for me but changed every spring on it and upgraded the extractor. All for a little over $50 and 30 min.

I have to order them online, Glock only sells the std and night sites, but I'm thinking more oalong the lines of a Heine Straight Eight or the Advantage Tactical sights that look like an upside down V.

I am taking it to Glock tomorrow though for a once over, since I have no idea of a round count for it.

Glock changed out the sights on my 19 with a set of warren tacticals i brought in

They were a little leery at first and said they might scratch the rear sight since the glock rear sight tool didn't fit and they would have to drift it in with a punch

After I told them i would throw it down the parking lot if it would make them feel better, we had no issues

They also went though the entire pistol and changed anything they felt was necessary

Didn't charge me a dime.

I'll probably buy a glock a year through GSSF for a long time

LOLZ!

I once set a rifle down on some gravel and someone said "You're gonna scratch that!"...so I stepped on it and smiled.
