I am looking for a grease to use on both AR-1x rifles and handguns (Glocks, Kel-Tec P-32, etc). I know there is a maintenance and cleaning forum here but there is not a consensus as to the best grease to use and I have no clue who the people over there are so I don't know who to listen to.
So, what grease should I use? I don't necessary have to have "the best" - if Product #1 is only 5% better than Product #2 but it is 200% the cost then I am happy with Product #2. So far it looks like the top choices are (in no particular order): Slip 2000 Extreme Weapons Grease (EWG, not EWL) Mil-Comm TW25B Tetra Gun Grease Lubriplate 130-A Mad Dog Labs XF7 Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease Cheapest high temp bearing grease Is there any interest in a group buy on gun oil or grease? Both are a lot cheaper in volume. For example, you can get a gallon (128 ounces) of Break Free CLP for $54 out the door right now. Combine that with travel size containers for ~ a dollar and you can split it five ways so each person gets 25.6oz of CLP for $12.80. |

http://www.silverbulletgunoil.net/index.html HOW does SILVER BULLET GUN OIL work? SILVER BULLET GUN OIL CONTAINS 13% USDA LIQUEFIED PIG FAT. The PIG FAT is mixed with our blended, hi-grade WEAPONS OIL designed for use in ALL FIREARMS. The oil is applied to the inside of the barrel of any firearm or weapons system. When fired, BULLETS are coated with SILVER BULLET GUN OIL containing the PIG FAT. The PIG FAT is transferred to anything the BULLETS STRIKE. The coating of OIL CONTAINING PIG FAT effectively DENIES entry to Allah's Paradise to any Islamo-Fascist terrorist KIA with a bullet coming from a firearm using SILVER BULLET GUN OIL in the barrel. SILVER BULLET GUN OIL uses the belief system of Allah's Islamo-Fascist terrorists to put fear of death into them, a fear they haven't had until NOW. |

High temp bearing grease. Find the highest temp you can. You'll surpass the temperature quickly in an AR platform, but it'll still resist breakdown, drying, and crusting for far longer than liquid lubes.
I've used the same cheap can of bearing grease in my suppressed AR at a handful of classes, and it's worked great. I've had no weapon-related failures that I can recall, even suppressed. Cleanup is easier, and the lube doesn't spray out after a few shots like liquids. |
| I use tetra grease and I've been very happy with it. If you use it along with a liquid lube it seems to work even better. I put it on the rails of my bolt carrier and use liquid on the cam pin and bolt and it seems to hold up better than using just liquid especially when shooting suppressed a lot. |

FWIW, Ken Hackathorn runs motor oil and/or grease on all his firearms. I used to run some sort of automotive synthetic grease on all my guns, can't say that I ever had a problem with them when I did. Per this article from Larry Vickers, Hackathorn runs Lubriplate grease. |
| Lubriplate is the original spec grease for garands and 14's. We even use it on the black hawk helicopter. On the bifilars. They are exposed to the elements and the grease does ok. I use it in the buffer tube on the spring of my AR's to keep them quiet. Good stuff. |

Then I guess Ken Hackathorn lied to me when he told me to my face that he uses automotive oils and greases. At least 10 guys here were in the same Carbine Class a few months ago when he was talking about it. |

Since there is no date on that article I am sure your info is newer. That article could be several years old for all I know. I have also corrected the link in my post since I screwed it up originally. It is a good article on lubrication notwithstanding that error. I do appreciate your info. |

For appllications where I use grease, I've been using Coastal hi temp wheel bearing grease from the auto parts store. I was in the auto parts store yesterday and out of curiousity checked the labels on Mobil 1 synthetic grease and the Coastal stuff. The Mobil 1 was rated to 350 and the Coastal was rated to 500 degrees. That surprised me since regular Mobil 1 synthetic oil has a pretty high smoke point, up around 450 I think. Anyway, I'm gonna stick with the Coastal hi temp wheel bearing grease, seems to work pretty good for me.
Edit to add: I also prefer FP10 by shooters choice to CLP when I'm using a regular gun oil type product and the shooters choice bore solvent is really good stuff for cleaning. Just another opinion FWIW. |

so tell me about this slip 2k? I got a sample of it from the HTF shoot. is that the EWL or the EWG? is it good? right now i have always used hopes oil. probably not the best thing to use. BTW: page 2 :) I've only recently switched over to Slip. I got the EWL for my AR's but only have about 50 rds through it using the EWG, so I really can't comment there. I've used the 'regular' slip 2K on my pistols for a few months now and I'm pretty darned impressed. Good reading on their website about it, and I'm now a believer that it's not just hype or propaganda.. The metal absorbs it and it pretty much provides on demand/continuous lubrication. Doesn't burn off. Also puts a teflon like coating on the weapon. After about 4 outings I really started to notice a difference in clean up. Now cleaning is a snap. I'm impressed enough that I'm strongly considering switching from brand X grease to slip EWG on my 1911's now after seeing the results of the regular lube on my other pistols. ETA: It made a substantial difference on my wheel gun functioning as well... |
