When using the collapsing stock on my Daniel Defense M4, I always use the notch that is one short of "all the way out", when I'm not wearing heavy clothing or armor (which is most of the time).

Sometimes I'll use it shorter, when wearing the aforementioned armor/clothing, but I never use it all the way out.

So, I drilled and tapped an 8-40 hole in between the locking holes in the buffer tube and installed a small bolt to stop the rearward movement of the stock exactly where I need it.

Works like a champ.

I like it!  Of course if I do that I will by habit pull all the way back, click once forward, and be in the wrong slot

That's a good modification you've done for yourself personally. I like it. Though I wouldn't have as much use for it, as I prefer my stock all the way out.
