Well, I got my badge from River Bend today, and, lo and behold, it came on a day that I happened to have off of work.  Anyway, I went and shot steel targets with some Glocks, no big deal, but I had pcked up my POF P-308.  When I got done with the Glocks, I stepped over to MP1, and set up targets at 100 yards.

A little backstory: I've had this gun for ~5 months and havent had an opportunity to shoot it.  Anyway, the thng was as smooth as silk.  Not one jam, nor a hiccup.  Of course, I only popped off 60 rounds.  I have on it a set of YHM BUIS, and that is all.  I've never really owned anything much with irons only that was worthy of shooting 100 yards (frankly, I can't see anythng on the targets from that distance).  This was the final 40 popped off (the first 20 I just blasted at nothing while the range was hot).

Is that supposed to be some kind of group? Were you shooting from the hip or something?
5/14/2010 7:01:34 PM EDT
[#2]
Like I said, I couldn't see what I was hitting at that distance, and frankly, without any adjustment to the sights, I was impressed I hit anything.  That, and I'd never shot the gun before.

If you were on MP2 that wood backing is 50 yards, not 100.

Thanks there for editing your post there BF. Evidently now it was on MP1

A 12"+ spread even with irons is unacceptable. Maybe you have a loose barrel nut or something. I've seen all sorts of weird shit with POFs.

Send it back.

Welcome to River Bend. It has the reputation for being fud land and it kinda is, but I'm certainly not in that crowd. Don't worry, I can tell from your post that you are not an experienced shooter. Get some instruction from someone who knows what they're talking about and you'll be fine. If your concerned about the accuracy of your rifle, let someone else shoot it who you know can shoot and check it.

Actually, it was MP1, you know, where the new giant backstop is. They were running a smalbore match on MP2. And as far as experience, like I said (it wold be nice, since I bothered to post if you guys would read before you reply) this was the first time I have shot anything worth shooting 100yds off hand and with no glass, and, again I couldn't see what I was hitting until I had dumped everything and the range went cold and we went down range. And it was the first time this gun had been shot

And no lube right?
5/15/2010 3:02:14 AM EDT

No, I brought slip 2k, though the manufacturer clams no lube is required. I put a little on the charging handle, but none on the bolt.
5/15/2010 3:06:06 AM EDT

I've always wanted to know how that works...no lube.

Seems like it would be nice...but certainly no necessity.

Dang...bring her in to 25 and zero those sights.

I do want a 308...and the POFs are gorgeous. Eyesight aside...should be able to put sights on something near center mass consistently at 100yds.

Right, I just couldn't tell where I was hitting.  I was impressed that it was on the paper out of the box.  Or, at least the sights needed no adjustment.

All of the closer lanes were occupado yesterday.

1. the guy works at one of our sister stores.
2. We talk a couple times a week.

and most importantly:

3. taking non-factory sights and putting them on a gun then shooting it for 60 rounds without zeroing is crazy. .308 ain't cheap. $40 in ammo just sprayed away. Regardless, the rifle SHOULD have been grouping SOMEWHERE. Even w/ Irons a $2k+ gun should shoot a helluva better than that.

So professional opinion is to either
a. put some glass on it so that you can see 100 yds. [Although I saw several shooters hit Steel at 300 with Irons today]
b. Let someone who can shoot irons Zero the damn thing and then shoot a group at 100.
c. Send it back to POS and tell them it groups like shit.
d. Sell it and buy something else.

Oh I know who both of you are (I was at Eric's class with the two of you). Still rough though!  Bad thing is it still looks better than any of my groupings.......

Speaking of 308 I need to go to the sister store and get some. I plan on shooting the FAL on the memorial day match.

I can assure you that any grouping issues were the shooter's fault, not the gun's; I was a little jittery, and I was shooting fairly rapidly. Frankly, by the time I got over to MP1 and waited for the range to go cold, I was tired.  I had just spent an hour plus shooting steel, and it was nearly six.  And that was $20 worth of PMC I dumped.

Anyway, Derek, any time you get an opportunity, why don't you run over to RBGC with me.

And, last but not least, here are some pics some of you requested:

Definately get it good to go with irons.

The like Derek said, something that you can see good through.

First off...welcome to RBGC!

Secondly, I would hope it would do better, but the shotgun pattern is indicative of a shooter issue IMHO.  Don't sweat it.  Just need to start at 50 and then move out.  A bigger bull and a larger surrounding white paper area can help a lot too.  The target *is* a distraction, but it ought to be a fairly visible and fuzzy distraction.

You guys crack me up!

Your next range visit should include a spotting scope and someone who will help you zero that rifle with iron sights.

Start off by centering the rear sight and make sure the front sight post is flush with the sight housing.  Fire five rounds at the target and adjust from there.  Shoot off the bench with a sandbag for support and slowly squeeze the trigger while controlling your breathing.  I wish I could go with you to help you out and get some range time in.

IF your stating you shot that group "kinda fast" and offhand I would delete that post.  You don't need any heat from the RBGC range police seeing that you fired a weapon faster than once every 6 seconds when not in a shooting jacket and in either sitting or prone position.

Yes, best to get this out of your system now...before the new rulebook gets released and cans and controlled pairs are allowed at RBGC.

Bruce,

Is this true? I have been waiting for this news. When would such a rule take place?

I assume it would be Fiscal year July1?

The new rulebook is currently before the board, it could be released any time now.  Certainly this year.  Cans are no longer forbidden and there will be new training rules for the action bays.  All the haterade is about to go sour.

Great so more lead from yall falling on us in the Pits
I know a few of the guys up there said they would be looking into cans once the rules changed
