I recently reinstalled Windows XP on my PC and now I don't have any sound.  The system isn't recognizing my SM Bus Controller and I've tried 57,000 different fixes.  Any suggestions?

Did you load the chipset, sound, video, etc. drivers for your pc?

This. Also, make sure your speakers are plugged in and turned up.

What make and model is your laptop?

The PC is a Dell XPS 410.  I've downloaded chipset drivers from Nvidia and Intel to no avail.  I don't recall what sound card I have.  The only other disks I have from Dell are Roxio Creator MyDVD Combo and Sonic CinePlayer.

Try a USB speaker system.  I had a similar problem on a built PC and never resolved it.  USB speakers worked fine.

Go to device manager, double click any unknown devices, go to details, highlight the device id, press ctrl-c, and paste it here.  Do this for each unknown device.

I just got the problem with the SM Bus Controller resolved in the device manager by installing another Intel utility.  I still don't have sound, though.  The only issue I have on the device manager is this.

The device id for the Codec is

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7618&SUBSYS_102801DB&REV_1002\4&329F3825&0&0201

Why?  Go to dell.com and put in your service tag #.  It'll let you know what specs/hardware your pc has.

Even better, go to support.dell.com, and enter your service tag and it will list every driver for your system for instant download.

I've already hit that up and fixed a few issues, but the sound thing still escapes me.

hmmm... what service pack level are you  at right now? Have you gone through all the Windows Updates?  This looks like the UAA fix problem.

Here's the error I get when trying to update the IDT driver.

How about right clicking on it, clicking uninstall, and letting it re-detect?

I got it.  I was downloading a driver from HP for the IDT Codec, but I needed a Sigmatel Codec driver.

I'm listening to Shinedown as we speak.
