Ok, so I'm really tired of paying $15 for 5 razors.  I'm thinking of getting a razor that takes the double edge razor blades.  I know that I will pay more for the razor, but less for the blades. I believe that it will pay off in the long run.  So, does anyone use the older vintage style razors?  What are your experiences?  I've seen the "safety razors" for around $35, but there are some more expensive "adjustable razors" that run $50-$70.  Any opinions?

Yep, paying for razors sucks and those lame gimmicks to "resharpen" the blades don't work. I read an article about a month ago that says most people throw their razors away too soon and that the blades will cut for much longer. I have been using the same Mach 3 razor for a month now (but I shave every other day) and it shaves just fine. I have not experienced any cuts, nicks, rashes or anything. I am going to do this from now on. Before I would use it 5-6 times and then throw it away.

They last *much* longer than the mfg. advertises (go figure...)

I generally use mine for 2 months or so, but then again I only shave about 1/2 of my face (I've got a small beard), and save 3x a week or so (and not on weekends).  I switch to a new set of blades when I start getting more nicks then normal.

I don't like forking out for expensive blades either.  I'm a Gillette guy and loved the free Fusion I got in the mail several years ago but went back to the Mach3 because of the crazy price of blades.  I use blades a long time.  The way to make them last is to clean it and get it dry and keep it dry after shaving.  I just hit it with a hair dryer for a few seconds. Leaving them wet or air drying is what kills the edge faster than anything.

According to Clark Howard...

If you dry the blades on a towel after you shave, you will really extend the life of the edge. It's the water keeping the blades wet that dulls them faster than cutting hair.

I've started trying it and it seems to work so far.

Why not pay $3-$5 for 8 disposables?

Maybe I'm just into the world of high quality shaving.

I bought  a straight razor last weekend at a gunshow in Oklahoma.  Don't think I'll be using it on the beard though.

This. 1/2 inch for my head, then shortest for shaving.

Yeah, but a Marine could probably manage to store a spare magazine or fighting knife behind there somehow.  The rest of us would just look like weirdos with a multi-stache trying to fake being tacticool if we had one then.

I'm with LaRue on this one - I buy the cheapo twin blade razors (or sometimes the single blade ones) and have no issues.  I lather my face with bar soap and shave my face in the shower (all except my small beard).  I rarely if ever get any nicks, and I think I probably use three razors per year?  That's like a whopping $3 spent.  I used to have the fancier razors and changed heads on the thing every so many weeks to keep from digging trenches in my face until I discovered shaving after a hot shower while still in the shower is a billion times easier.  I just shave with the same razor each day until it leaves stubble, and then I switch to a different one.

LOL!  I have to shave everyday.  I tried disposables, but they chew my face up.  My face hair grows in patches on my face, so growing a beard is out of the question.  I tried to grow a stach' once on vacation, but my tounge kept wanting to lick my upper lip and I had to shave it off. LOL!

I use Mach 3 Turbo blades.  I've found that there IS a difference betwixt regular and Turbo blades.  I shave every third day, and I'll use a blade for about 5-6 shaves, but I can definitely tell a difference when a slap a new one on.  The shave is far smoother, with way less irritation.  My face does NOT take well to shaving, so I have to use a new blade or it feels like I'm ripping the hair out.  I'll try drying them off after shaving.

If you go the double edge route, use a quality blade like Feather or Derby.  Feathers are wicked sharp.  Check out badgerandblade.com for more info on blades and razors, including ratings and descriptions.

I use Personnas from Walmart and they've been great. The cost of an entry level safety razor and a pack of blades is about the same as the cost of two packs of Mach 3 blades.

I shave my head with a Gillette Fusion and use a Fusion Power for my face.
Prep is key, I only shave after a hot shower.

My skin doesn't like most shaving creams in a can so I use HeadBlade Shave Cream for both my head and face.

After shaving my head, I apply HeadBlade Lotion

Drying your blades well after shaving will result in longer blade life.

Those Personnas seem to be the best quality for the money. I've used a bunch of overpriced platinum safety blades and they don't shave nearly as good or hold up as long as Personna.

Even though I don't have a super thick beard i still have to shave every day. I'd grow it out but it's splotchy like a Willie Nelson.
