I need to replace the windows in my house.  I've got HD coming Monday for an estimate.  Can anybody recommend anyone else?  What things do I need to know to make an intelligent decision?  Any/all help is appreciated.

My dad just replaced all the windows in the front of our house...think it was like $12,000 for everything....

we got Pella windows, which so far are awesome...they kinda fold in to make it easy to clean....

Ill snoop around in his office and see if i can find who did it, but im pretty sure a Pella guy came out, and sold them, and they just contracted out to get the job done....

make sure to look into energy efficiency upgrade tax credits.  you can save something like 30% up to a certain amount.  i think the credit is around $1500 or so.

Keep in mind some of these windows just pop in the existing frame...Its a bit ghetto in my opinion particularly if you are replacing them because the olds ones are rotting.

do it yourself.  google it-how to replace windows.

takes about 45 min each to remove the old sash and replace with a vinyl replacement.

I did all mine this past year for under 14 windows at approx $178 ea.

I would do two/room on my week off day, then maybe one while the wife was making dinner.

too easy.

We just did all the windows in the house. I think the total was about 18k installed. House feels better already. no drafts and the power bill is down.

I agree with what's been said about Pella windows. A friend and I just bought and put some in this past week and they're great. I don't think
that I would buy any other brand.

the above is best and either "stock builing supply or Lummus building supply"
Long as frames are ok it does just as good and hell of alot cheaper and I did all mine about 15 in a day.

My buddy works for Pella in the Atlanta area. I can give him your info if you would like.

I met Handydave today, btw.  He was generous enough with his time to come by and teach me a little about replacement windows.  I learned more in the 45-60 minutes we spent together than I could have ever learned on the interwebbs.  He even brought a sample window to show me what needed to be done on mine.
