When I see a gun for sale that has been painted with weird camo patterns or krylon, my value judgement instantly goes from exc or vg to poor. At least 50% loss of value. I mean you wouldn't paint a maseratti with krylon and expect to get new value for it. Why guns? Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

And no, I have never hunted humans.
If you want it, spend the money and dip the gun or stock. |

There is a valid point made that some people will devalue anything painted or otherwise customized. If you don't like paint, don't use it or buy used guns that are painted.
To me guns are tools. I actually use my guns for hunting, competition, training, etc. Thus, the paint serves a purpose. The lighter colors I use on rigs that will be in the sun long periods help to keep the weapons cool, which helps to minimize mirage and keep the weapon cooler to the touch. Regarding camo, perhaps my hunting experiences are different from other guys. I prefer to "still hunt" (stalk) and anything that helps breakup shapes can be useful. To the guy waiting in a tree stand to ambush the unsuspecting Bambi from above might not realize as much benefit. I wouldn't own a Maserati. My vehicles are also tools to get me and my stuff from one point to another. Frankly, I can't tell a Maserati from a Ferrari. But, if painting my SUV with Krylon was practical and gave me some benefit I'd do it in a heartbeat. In fact I did that to a $7500 brand new 4-wheeler that I bought for hunting. It was a tool. It got used, not abused but did get a Krylon paint job. The guy who bought it didn't mind because he also was buying a tool and could see through the removable paint. Mark |

I think it kills resale value too. that being said I have kryloned several of mine. I just don't plan on reselling them. every gun I have had to sell i have greatly regretted it.
I like the personal touch of my stuff, I guess that is why I don't mind the paint that I put on. |
|
I remember watching a film about some soliders in Africa talking about cammoflage. They said that made a habit of asking the bushmen what was the first thing they noticed about their team coming out of the treeline/jungle.
Always the same answer: The black rifle. Hey it's your weapons. Do with them as you will. I do like painting some of mine so they're not as hot to touch in the sun. Some others I will keep in their condition in case I do decide to sell/trade at a later date. And I only use removeable paint. +1 on the tool perspective Book. |

Until a lot of people realize that these guns are tools the statement above won't make any sense. Then again I doubt a lot of AR's ever get shot more than 50-100 rounds per year. Black guns stick out. Black is a stupid color for a fighting gun. All my working guns get paint. Not only does it offer the benefits above but it actually helps protect the gun, think of it as an extra layer beyond the park/anodizing. All that said I wouldn't paint a gun that I didn't plan on keeping forever. Krylon generally strips right off with some Carb cleaner. |

I don't paint because of resale value.
I do however like mixed colored accessories. Just breaks up a lot of dark black and gray for me. Can't bring myself to paint things. I'm too convinced that I'll eff something up. That being said I cut out a bunch of camo patterns in hard paper of reeds, leafs, and those blotchy patterns , bought a bunch different shades of green, brown, and sand colors, and some brake cleaner. I have everything I need to do the project but just can't get past the mental block of doing it. Thinking I might try on one of the el cheapo rifles and see how it works out. |

I was going turkey hunting, and the only shotgun I had was the 500 which was all black. I put some of that camo tape on it and really regretted it. took it off before I went, cleaned it up, covered it with pinstraw and went to town! came out really good I think. grab a shotgun and give it a try. |
|
the krylon camo is the stuff I have used. there are more colors.
it wipes off, found out the hardway. you are right down the street and the wife is going to be3 out of town so I should have lots of free time. every weekend I am going to be at creekside or the appleseed shoot. sunday is etowah valley sporting clays and hopefully Erik's pistol class. other than that I am wide open

I am not a chef but I have professional knives, I'm not a carpenter but buy mainly professional grade tools, etc, etc. This seems to be more personally directed at two individuals on here that have and are very willing to give their advice to others. (and its greatly appreciated!) I know one of these individuals more than the other but nonetheless do know them both. I have never heard them make any claims to be anything they are not just knowledgeable people with information to share. Back on point... Does anyone have pics of a rifle (AR) before being painted, painted and then after the paint being removed? I woudl like to paint a few but, have a hard time pulling the trigger, would be a little more willing if I knew I could take it back to the original. OR do you have to have it refinished? |
|
One question i have for the guys who get krylon to wipe off, i've painted stuff with a couple different kinds of krylon and it will not wipe off after it cures, for the first 6 or 7 days it will come off with brake cleaner or MEK, but after it has cured on for a couple of weeks, or after you bake it on, it doesn't wipe off at all, it will wear off eventually, but the shit is even hard to sand off completely. I do see that duracoat does offer a removable paint that i am thinking about though, i want to paint a couple of mine also, but like others just can't seem to pull the trigger on it.
edit: just want ya to know not tryin to step on any toes or say it won't work, i might be doing something wrong. |

Brake fluid or a good paint stripper will take it off long after it was painted. I will not harm the anodizing, and most quality plastics. |
|
Brake cleaner or carb cleaner seems to make it go away pretty quickly. I can see the brake fluid working too as that shit will eat through almost any paint! even factory paint and powerder coating!!!
you guys should browse the refinishing forum under the armory section. lots of people painting just about everything you can think of over there. |

Painted guns are cool.
I paint all of mine black. I painted one of them WHITE, I felt like a rebel that day, plus, I used to live 93 miles south of the Arctic Circle. My daughter and I painted her .22 pink. That one was fun too. Some of the customers I deliver to various places paint their guns a sandy and grey color. That's cool too. I figured, why paint mine, I only go out at night, Black seems like a good color for night operations... What if... you buy a gun that is already painted... you could paint it black, then sell it at a higher price... you could become rich... |

My bolt gun has so much krylon on it in the last few years I forgot what color the gun was when I got it
My Noveske/Sabre SBR ..I painted it My M41000 has a permanent "baked" on finish I painted the AR and Bolt gun after picking them up after having them sit out in the sun at Creekside a time or two....they get a lil hot |
|
I am working on a new project as we speak. I have a singleshot 12ga I got for like $80 a few years ago. I'm going to "camo" it for my son to use for turkey this year.
If you haven't turkey hunted then you haven't seen the why we use camo for them. Better eyesight then deer. I have a few others I have painted for fun and for the looks. As with all guns everyone has what they consider nice, cool, or just plain different. Am I going to paint my $800 win model 70/leupold scope deer rifle? Nope. Will I mess around and tacticool and paint my mossberg 500 that I bought used for $150? You betcha..... How much can a camo paint job hurt that value. |
|
Who cares really? If you don't want to buy a painted gun then don't. If you paint it and intend to resell it later, realize that you might not get as much for it.
I'd hate to see the looks when I Krylon my Mk11 Mod0 when I get back in town. I'm sure to damage the collectability and resale value when I do that, then again I guess I already am doing that by shooting the piss out of it. My rifles are tools not show queens and Krylon has just as much practical as well as aesthetic applications if it's your thing. |
