Hello all!
I am in the market for a new AR, I think. I'm familiar with most brands and configurations, but wanted some input in case I'm missing something. I would like a full size flattop (receiver and gas block), 20" bbl, 1:7 twist, chambered for and capable of running 5.56. Cost is a concern, but I don't want a POS, either. What manufacturers out there will give me that twist? I used to have an OlyArms, which I loved to death, but it had a 1:9 and since Im going for a new one, I'd like a faster twist for some of those heavier rounds out there. Mucho thank you. Oh, and Im in the ATL area. |

Hello and welcome. Have you given thought of building your own. It is pretty easy (if you remember to put some pins in properly) and can save a lot of money. There is always a deal to be had in one way or another. Just look around. Yes, I have, that was actually another question I had, was about building one. Having owned an AR already, I am familiar with its operation and basic design, but wondering how complicated it is to put one together from the ground up, and, more importantly, what sorts of special tools I might need to do so. |

If you just buy a complete upper half, you can put a stripped lower, stock, and parts kit together easily with a hammer and some punches. I have done many of them and had no problems. Check out the tacked threads at the top of the "Build it yourself" forum for more info on the procedure. If you want to put together your own upper, you also need a vise block like the DPMS Panther Claw (love mine) and a barrel wrench to torque down the barrel nut.
As for the upper half, I am impressed with Bravo Company's barrels, as mentioned above. I bought an 11.5" barrel from them for my pistol build, and it is very nice. http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-M16-Government-20-Upper-Receiver-Group-p/bcm-urg-gov-20.htm Note that this upper half does not come with a bolt/carrier group, but you can add one as an option in that dropdown list. You also need a charging handle and handguards or a free float tube. |
