So I got a disorderly conduct charge a few weeks ago in Remerton, Ga. a small precinct that covers the college party area of Valdosta. I was helping a friend who was in a fight when I was drawn into the fight myself. What is the normal fine or penalty for a disorderly conduct arrest? And can this be settled before the court date? I have a buisness trip the day before the court date and don't wanna cause problems with my job. Any advice will be appreciated.

Had a buddy in college get arrested while we were in Bham.

The guy he beat up (who...coincidentally...started the fight...) showed up at court with a lawyer. He paid part of the guy's lawyer fee and they left with a small fine. All out of pocket was around $250 and it didn't show up on the record. First offender waiver or something to that effect.

Not sure how different it is in GA, though.

Was anyone hurt, or jsut the typical druken puching/shoving match?  I'm no lawyer, but I woudl talk to one, maybe even one from there if your not.  If it is a college town with out much else it could be easly taken care.

Nobody was hurt, and I don't have the $$$ for another lawyer, I'm already paying one for a custody dispute. I just want to pay my fine and be done with it, I need to be 300 miles away at work when they want me there.

Have your lawyer waive your arraignment and you can skip the first courtdate. Disorderly conduct can be a county ordinance or a state misdemeanor, max is 12 months and $1,000.

Thanks, but what can I do without securing another lawyer? I'm tapped after Christmas and won't be able to afford the services.

go get a police report and find out if you were charged with ocga violation or a city/muni code violation...

use lexis nexs or whatever to research and look up what that code is...if its municiple...i belive municode.com or something like that has lots of city ordinances....

that will give you a fiar playing field if you know what exactly you're charged with

IANAL....just a CJ student

since they didn't get warrants im betting it is just a city ordinance. See if you can just pay it and hope they don't try to put you on probation. believe me if it is still the same you don't want to go to court. They used to have it only once a month and the line goes all the way around the building

since you already have a lawyer just ask him to make the call for you. He can do it he went to lawyer school :). If he refuses just give the clerk of court a call. If you do not lose your temper and are very polite (believe me these ladies get cursed out a lot so being angry will not help) they are pretty helpful. Just tell her your problem and at the very least they will bump you back to the next court date.

and finally you need to learn what i did after living there for a year. STAY OUT OF REMERTON

Could you lose a GFL over something like this?

Probably not, it's the bottom of the barrel as far as charges go. But it's always possible for good character reasons.

Your in a custody battle as well!?!  I would get a lawyer for sure, as soon as your spouse, girlfriend, etc gets wind of your trouble they'll use it against you for sure.  Even though you see it as just helping out a buddy, they'll present it as you hanging out with people that do not use good judgement and it is nothing a child should be around.  Throw in any other fights, agruments, anger issues and she'll have you.

Well I spoke with the COC and she pushed my case back to Feb. 23 and is sending me papers to enter my plea so I can avoid coming to court. At least I dont have to worry about missing time at work now hopefully. Thanks for the advice guys.

Looks like you got what you wanted. However, tapped or not I wouldn't face any charges in court or settle anything early without first consulting an attorney. No joke. You might be "tapped" now but I personally don't want anything to stick with me forever just because I didn't have a few bucks at that one moment in time. YMMV.

The best legal advice for anyone that asks that question ... ask an attorney ... preferably your own ... one who is looking out for you personally.

I actually did consult my lawyer and that was his advice. He said there is really no easy way to deal with the city of remerton.

I got one about 2 years ago, signed a paper saying i was guilty and paid a fine before court i'm thinking the $250 was about right.
