If, and I mean if, our deal goes through on the house we are trying to buy, the kitchen floor needs some work.  Its got vinyl on it now that needs replacing.  I don't really vinyl so I would like to have 12x12 tile installed.  Anyone here know how to it and want to make some money?  The kitchen is rather small, 10x20.....

you're golden.  just clean the slab really well.  might need to etch it with muratic acid.

layout all your tile with the little + shaped spacers;  dry fit is always best.

once you have everything laid out and cut to fit, spread a coat of thinset on your slab with a toothed trowel.  thinset has a working tome of about 20 minutes, so don't get too far ahead of yourself.

lay your tile in the thin set and let cure at least overnight.  3 days would be better.

grout with whatever color grout mix you want...sanded grout is for joints>1/8".  unsanded is for smaller joints.  1/4" is standard for residential.

easy as pie...just pay attention to detail and take your time.

+1 I added on to my house last year and did all the work myself other than roughing it in (time factor) & did the tile floors myself just follow the directions good. I made a mistake on one of the steps and had to do a little scrubbing When I was grouting them in I didn't do what I read & did not wipe all the grout off the tiles as I went got done & read the directions again & saw my mistake then cleaned them good just as the grout was starting to dry so I had to do some good scrubbing to get it off It's like building your own AR15

I just installed 12x12 porcelain in my hallway.  It is on the second floor with sheathing and cement backer board.  The hardest part was removing the old tile and backer board.  I bought one of the tile cutters with the carbide wheels but it was too difficult to make some of my cuts (less than 1/4" from edge).  HD had a deal on a cheap 7" wet saw and it works really well.  I have a couple of bathrooms to do so I figured it will be a worthwhile investment.

Tile isn't a difficult project if you are a little handy.  If not, have a pro do it.  Slab on grade is the best base because it is solid and doesn't require too much prep.  Most of the problems associated with tile involve crappy base where the tile and grout cracks.

^ THIS

It really is that simple. If I had it to do over again I would probably have someone do my shower. A tile shower is a real pain in the ass.
