I have been carrying the same Ruger P89DC as my concealed carry piece for 14 years. I am extremely attached to it. It has been there for me when I needed it in several bad situations, it is accurate, reliable, and very tolerant of me and my situations. From having it rub against my stomach and sweating on it for 14 years I have worn the blue off of a good portion of the frame, there is pitting on the slide (mostly at the decocker), and rust is getting hard to control. I realize that most people would do a finish on a 1911 or something similar but I really care about this gun and I obviously have a history with it. I have seen articles about parkerizing, various paints, baking, etc and I have no idea what would actually work. I'd like to carry this gun for as long as possible. This is Georgia so I sweat what, nine months out of the year? I'd rather not do it myself on this piece. Do you guys have any suggestions for someone to help me with my little friend? I am Atlanta.

Send it to Walter Birdsong and get the Black T treatment. 601-939-7448. Had it done to my P90 about 11 or 12 years ago. You can see a little wear now, but it still looks great and the teflon in the treatment makes it function slicker'n snot. |

you may have to balance the refinishing cost against the total value of the pistol (or a newer replacement)...sentimental value notwithstanding.
are these pistols aluminum framed? if so, that finish on the frame is the anodizing that has worn off from use. if it were me, i would take my time, detail strip it (get help if needed), clean/remove rusting, and do a spray paint job with an epoxy based paint (teflon or moly (MoS2)). you can always send it out but check your lead time and consider doing it yourself (rattle can or airbrush). be prepared to be unsatisfied when the painted finish scratches/chips from holster wear as most do (pro jobs or DIY same same). but it will alleviate a lot of rusting issues and freshen up the look of the pistol for a good many years. ETA: i have done this to several SIG pistols i acquired a number of years back and they came out well. |

If you love it, it does not matter if it is irrational. Send it off to get Robarized. It's the best finish a EDC can have. http://www.robarguns.com/roguard.htm Roguard is a molybdenum-disulfide based polymer finish specifically designed to provide lubricity and corrosion protection for metal components exposed to harsh environments. Originally formulated as a protective coating for firearms applications, Roguard provides the lubrication and corrosion protection necessary to meet U.S. Military Machine Gun Dry Firing Requirements after 60 days sea water immersion or 1000 hours salt spray MIL-STD-TEST. Roguard is polymer technology at its best. Twice as hard as Polymax and twice as corrosion-resistant, Roguard will take far more punishment than any other black finish available - tested both in the laboratory and in the field. We are so confident about Roguard we will give it a lifetime guarantee* against peeling, flaking and corrosion! |

I saved up for it as a broke ass pizza delivery driver and it has been a very loyal friend. I think I may do this in a month or two. Thanks man! Actually thanks everyone who responded! Oh, and I met the kicker of hippies and lived to tell the tale! ...for now |
