i bought an upper a while back that had a phantom vortex flash hider installed on it.  i had it out on the range today for the first time, and noted a distinct ringing each time i shot...almost like a striking a tuning fork.  has anyone else experienced this?

i am just curious...the upper ran fine, and it seems to be reasonably accurate.

Yep that's what happens when you use a vortex flashhider. It along with the AAC BlackOut flash hider produce the same pinging noise.

short of installing a different FH is there anything that can be done to quiet it down?

it's a design feature.

if you run shoot-through muzzle caps in the field, it will not ring until cap is 'removed'.

the old ones had an annular groove that you could put a loop of wire around to keep branches from snagging (or the Vortex from ringing) but the warning was slight degradation in performance.

after you touch off that first shot, that little ring is of no consequence.
