Hey fellers - I was at my local gunstore (real good dudes by the way - The AR Bunker in Newnan) - anyway - they have for sale a full-auto M-4 with a "lightning link" in it.  The gun costs considerably less than a registered M-16 lower but it still shoots full auto great (they demo'd it for me).

I have been assured this is legit and they are a class 3 dealer - my question is this:  What is a "lighting link"?  This deal seems to good to be true so I wanted to check with the fellers here and see if anyone has any advice or knowledge on this.

Thanks

Jake

What did they price it at?

A registered LL is legal.

you mean this http://www.quarterbore.com/nfa/lightninglink.html

is it a NFAa item?

Yep thats a lightning link, its an NFA item.  I have heard that registered LL's arent repairable if they break.

How much is it?  I've seen a LL and a host gun offered for $7,500 within the last few months so don't pay too much.

Yes, a LL can break.  KNS has a protector out that makes this a lot less likely than before.  The LL can be repaired depending on how and where it breaks.  M60Joe.com can do it.

Be advised that if having a 22LR upper is important to you then a LL is not the way to go.  If you are an M16 guru with a lot of free time you might be able to make it run if your zodiac sign is favorable.

ohhh god- its that simple?

not saying i would- but it looks like you could make one of those in your back yard with some steel and a dremel!

funny that something that looks like an oversized paperclip costs so much and you have to jump through hoops to get.

A LL is the least desirable  and least expensive AR conversion on the market.

There is a fellow name Joe Black that has made great improvements with the LL by designing something that greatly increases the strength.

It is priced at $5,650 bucks and Lee told me he could work with me on the price.  That price includes a colt SP1 carbine - which I think is worth at least a grand or so, likely more.  I am trying to trade into it but I don't think I can, I might have to just bite the bullet though because I think the price is a screaming deal.

Anymore comments on this?

If I can't get this I might try to get the SPITFIRE they have - bascially a economical thompson that takes M3 greasegun mags.  I can get this for $3,500, which I may be able to just buy.

Thanks

That is a fantastic deal for that setup assuming the link is in excellent shape.  I have seen Lightning LInks selling for over $5000 by themselves.   Is the Colt SP1 in good shape as well?  You need the SP1 style bolt to work with the RLL anyway, so that is great that it comes with one.  Just make sure you check the timing out so that you don't have any risk of damaging your gun or yourself.

You can get a select fire module for it to covert yours to do semi-auto.  That would be the best bet to do rather then being auto all the time.

Those are great prices if you are in the market!!

I've always though about a spitfire AKA poor man's TSMG but never been in the mood when I've ran across them.

The LL by itself will only fire full auto. I have the new setup that allows it to fire both semi and full. They are legal as long as they are registered. With the KNS protector you may have to remove a little metal off the rear pin holder on the upper. Mine works great and is a lot of fun. They can be repaired so long as the area with the serial number was not broken and that is unlikely.

What type of parts do I need to make this work on semi also and is that legal ?

So I could buy one of these...register my AR, and then pop it in the AR and have FA just like that?

I suppose machinegun laws keep me from machining one myself?

no, the LL itself is the registered part, that is why it has a serial number on it and it is the machine gun.  You register the LL, not the AR.

Even better.

I used to own a LL and traded it towards an M-16 many moons ago.  They are repairable as over time the tabs on some links have broken. M60 JOE does it (as stated)  I have heard nothing but things about him.  You can not alter or do anything to the serial number.

Out of the box, my LL ran great, You can get a select fire kit for them, (which is actually a reworked M-16 4 position kit). If you just drop in in a lower, it is full or safe only, a guy named Scott Bell used to sell them.

On the + Side
The price you are being quoted is an excellent price!
Cheapest way to get into an M-16 pattern Full -Auto
Mine went  Bang or Bang-Bang-Bang-Bang, everytime I pulled the trigger, when shooting you won't know the difference.
You can move from gun to gun. (provided the receiver is large enough to accept and you have to proper bolt)

On the - Side
May require tweeking and timing.
Least desirable, its not a RDIS or RR
Needs an SP1 type Bolt (or converted- see M60 Joe's site)
It can break (mine never did)

I would also post any questions on Subguns.com

Chris

Good Luck

If you want a full auto that is even less expensive than the LL, a member here in GA is selling their SWD M11-9. Look in the NFA section of the EE.

Friend of mine owned link #1 for a while it was the one that was a test case for the atf and it had all of the court paperwork with it. good price for a LL.

Use this link http://www.quarterbore.com/nfa/lightninglink.html  scroll down the page for the select fire kit.

There are actually two disconnectors that have to be used. Works very well.
