Can we PRETTY PRETTY PLEASE Have one?

There are 6 threads in the first 3 pages. It would solve two problems:

1. People should look there for ammo/ avail.
2. Everyone else wouldn't have to weed through 2-3 threads daily.

Maybe it's just me

I'm with HippieLover on this, every time I go to the HTF there is 5 new posts about 45 ammo here, or where can I get so and so. We need one tacked thread where everyone can put where/what they find.

Then do we need tacked threads for...

"Where can I get <gun>?"
"Where can I get <magazines>?"
"Hey, I just saw <so and so dealer> has <guns>!"
"Hey, I just saw <so and so dealer> has <receivers>!"
"Hey, I just saw <so and so dealer> has <ammo>!"
"Look at this guy's ad with the insane prices!"
"Just curious, but I'm thinking about doing such and such at my gun store.  What would you guys think about that?  Oh, BTW, this isn't a sales ad for my store."

Why don't people just go back to using the damn HTF for things other than where to buy and sell crap?  The intended purpose of the HTFs was to give local people a chance to discuss local issues, events, etc. OTHER THAN gun sales related stuff.  Frankly, it was a better place then.

So, shouold we have a bunch of tacked threads for various sales stuff?  For the record, that was the exact idea I recommended to site staff FIVE years ago and they said absolutely not.  The HTF were NOT to be a place for ads of any sort.  Ironic.

Good idea, but it will be the new GD in HTF because some people will bitch about the price or whatever they can. Hey, who do the FFL transfer for free of charge? ....you know the answer.

I hang out at EE when I need something, sometimes its take me a week or so,but I always get what I want. This weekend I went to gun show early and got primers.....

While I do agree there is a line that must be drawn in these hard times of finding ammo I hate wading through those threads. Personally I don't need any ammo. I have plenty to last me through all this panic buying and could really care less if Dick's has 2 boxes of .22 stingers. I personally enjoy the HTF for the local guys all getting together. While I don't really mind the occasional "I'm looking for XYZ thread" all these ammo threads are getting a little ridiculous. 6 months ago we never would have seen 6 ammo threads in the first 3 pages but I would think that this IS a local issue- shooters can't find ammo.

Sorry if I stepped on anyone's toes. The suggestion I made was to make the best of a bad situation. I agree with you Mark that the HTF shouldn't be the Hometown Swap Meet. My suggestion was to help those that are looking and to not make those who aren't looking wade through all the damn ammo threads.

Again, Sorry.

Mark,

I may be a fairly new member, but you've got to admit that times have changed.  One of the things that is very important to many HTF folks is where to buy ammo so they can keep going to the range and have fun.  I don't think we need a whole cluster of threads for other items, but ammo is the one thing that we need to keep enjoying what we like to do.  Wouldn't it be better to have one thread, at least until the ammo crunch is over (hopefully!), instead of cluttering up the HTF?  Remember, if there wasn't a need for these posts, no one would post them.

Thanks for listening.

I understand the shortage of ammo.

A tacked thread simply will NOT work unless someone (and it won't be me) wants to take the time and organize the FIRST POST (or one close to the top) with periodic updates.  In fact, such a post already exists in the ammo forum for 5.56 ammo.

I will tack a thread if someone agrees to maintain a main thread.  I nominate the hippie kicker since it was his idea.  The way it will have to work is this:

Members post a "ammo located at <insert store>".  The thread "updater guy" will then amend the main post to list the ammo, price, etc.

Members can also post WTB type comments like, "Anyone seen ..."  Other members can chime in and the "updater guy" will adjust the main thread accordingly.

This thread will contain ALL posts for ammo and reloading equipment & components.  All other threads of this nature not posted in the appropriate thread will be deleted.

This what everyone had in mind?

I still say this information is available elsewhere and this is not the proper place for it.  Also, this thread will likely just become a place for local dealers and members who do NOT pay to advertise here to advertise here.  But if this is what everyone wants, so be it.    You guys let me know.  I'm willing to give it a try and see how it goes.

Mark ..... In all honesty .... I think that there are some ammo dealers on here that would be upset since they are paying members to advertise on ar15.com when walmart gets the advertising for free.

YES its a royal pain in the ass to have to sort thru all the ammo threads on here .... but I have said it time in and time out ..... suck it up, go to your local gun shop ... give them a little patronage, patronize the dealers that pay for the site.  It seems that everyone wants the cheapest they can find ..... granted if its just lead that you are going to send downrange I dont want to pay an arm and a leg for it either .... but when I NEED or WANT some ammo to shoot I know where to go to get it.  Its really not that hard ... you just have to be patient .... order online .... yes it may not be in stock right now but it will come back instock.  Society and their instant gratification is what is the biggest problem.

You have a very valid point sir and while I appreciate the vote of confidence on running the tacked thread I still think we would continue to see several threads a week regardless of the ammo thread. I've taken a look at the ammo thread and it's a royal mess. Even with a tacked thread at the top members still continue to start new threads on the same subject.

Also I obviously have no MOD powers and could not lock/delete new ammo threads in the HTF so it would kind of like be pissing up a tree.

As far as dealers go I've never posted and will never post that *I* have XYZ for $$$. I WORK for an FFL. I make an hourly salary and my pay is not affected by daily sales. I make the same amount regardless of how we do. I could care less if we sell out of every round of ammo or if we sit on it for a while. I was not trying to pimp the place that I work at, I'm busy enough. I do kind of agree with Adam that such an anti-gun rights store like Wal-Mart gets so much play on the HTF that it kind of sickens me.

I retract my previous idea of a tacked thread simply because now I see that it wouldn't work anyway. I was just trying to make it so that those not interested in what shop had 9mm two days ago didn't have to read about it. Sorry.
4/28/2009 5:48:21 AM EDT
[#15]
Oh, I agree with your points, Adam.  I really don't understand what is so hard about calling a few local shops.  I've yet to have problems finding any ammo I want.  I also tend to buy a little over time as I find ammo instead of waiting until I have nothing on hand and want to go shoot.  I think most of the people freaking out fall in that category: I waited too late and am now in panic mode.  But others obviously need the help finding something and if this is what they think will help, I'm willing to give it a try.

I'm not trying to bust your balls.  I hate ALL those stupid threads asking for where is this and where is that.  "Oh, I saw a deal on a such and such."

And yes I agree that even with a tacked thread people will STILL continue to post stupid threads outside the designated thread.

And yes I agree that I fucking hate people pimping anti-gun places like Walmart.  But that is what you get when you allow a little slack on posting the "hey, look what I found" shit.

I agree site staff had this right years ago.  The HTF should be devoid of ALL sales type threads or threads announcing a deal, Deal, DEAL on some stupid shit no one wants.

Here is another thought that I have had .... I think that a lot of people are affraid to backorder something becuase of the way the economy is ....

Here is why I say that.  So many people are living paycheck to paycheck right now its not even funny.  They know they have X number of dollars in this check and have Y number of bills that need to be paid ..... now the Y number may be greater than the X number ..... leaving them with Z amount of bills not paid.  But in the weeks the that X number is bigger than the Y number they have V amount of money left over.  They want to take that V amount of money and put it towards ammo.  Maybe that V amount is only 20 dollars and they want to get the most for their money ... which I dont blame them.  Hell I am reloading becuase I cant afford to buy factory stuff at the moment.  But people are affraid to backorder some ammo because they have no idea when it will ship and they are affraid of not having the money in the account when the ammo is ready to ship.  Which I do agree with ..... I have ordered some stuff in the past that would allow me to pay via a money order or check .... but I had to order it at that point to be bale to make sure I could get it .... then I had to worry about how I was going to come up with the money to send the company.  I ended up putting the money in the bank account ... called the company and said ... bill me for it NOW, I dont care when it ships ... but get your money because it is there.

I dont have to absolutely have any ammo.  I have enough that I got a little here and there and there and here.  YES its cheaper to buy by the case .. but if you cant afford a full case ... buy a box this week ... next week buy a box .... dont go shoot this weekend because you have only 2 boxes ... wait till you can have a few more boxes before you go shoot.  That way you can go shoot and you dont have to worry about depleting your entire stash.

Reloading is kind of like buying ammo. It's only cheaper now because most reloaders already had a LOT of components before all this shit happened. Kind of like how I stockpiled ammo three years ago. It's  cheaper for me to shoot my stash than it is for someone to shoot ammo they bought last week.

I know that reloading overall is supposed to be cheaper but try finding Primers, Powder, Brass and Bullets without using anything you already have. Also Startup costs are still high if you actually go out and buy reloading equipment.

I agree with what you are saying.  I put together my reloading bench over time ... buying little pieces here and there.  I have not paid a dime for brass, the only thing that I have paid for is the consumables.

I got the press itself which is only a single stage... its not a progressive or any of that for 30 bucks, got dies for 3 different calibers totaling maybe 60 bucks, I have been shopping around ... nothing except for a few things have I bought brand new.

This past saturday I traded some 223 brass that I picked up from the range, some 45 brass picked up, 500 M855 projectiles that I got cheap, and a k of large pistol primers and a k of small rifle primers.  I ended up with 250 pieces of 308 brass, 1k of CCI large rifle primers, 200 Federal 210m's, 300 sierra match kings, a neck sizer die, and 2 pounds of vvn540 powder.  I can now make over 400 rounds for my bolt gun out of the stuff I picked up for about 90 dollars total investment on my part.  I cant buy Federal Gold Medal match in 308 for 90 dollars for 400 rounds.

But I do agree .... if at all possible put V into the bank.

Mark,

One thing that would help sticky threads (in general, not just an ammo thread) and not require updates from one person is if this site had a wiki type post section in each thread.  I go to several deal sites (fatwallet.com, slickdeals.net), and the first section after the initial post is a section that can be edited by anyone.  Anyone can go in and update or delete as required.  Something to pass on to the higher ups as a helpful site improvement.

Just imagine if we could all do our own updates to the "GA Member locator - by county" thread!

I personally don't see why it makes sense to pay twice as much for ammo at your local gun shop when you can often get the same ammo for half the price at Wal-Mart or online somewhere. I totally get the idea of supporting your buddies that own a gun store, but like the news says every other day, gun stores are one of the few businesses BOOMING right now. My business however is not. Therefore the best deal wins.

Kujo .... I agree ... I dont want to pay double what I can get somewhere else ..... but there is an old saying that goes ....... " I sell them for 99 cents ..................... but no I dont have any in stock".

Is it really worth it to drive around to 10 different MaoMarts searching for ammo and spending time and gas to get there when you could make a drive to a known spot and they are pretty much going to have what you want?  I did it one day ..... back the first March when I was going to shoot 3 gun at Riverbend ... I had just got a 9mm, yet I didnt have any 9mm to shoot out of it ..... I had my 1911 and plenty of 45 to shoot out of it .... but not enough mags..... I had peltny of Glock mags ... just no 9mm to go in them.  So I drove around, spent an entire day .... tried the MaoMart in Duluth, tried the one in Suwanee, tried the one in Lilburn, tried the one in Tucker.  Burnt up a lot of gas and time and found not the first round.  All 4 had 40 short and weak .... none had 9mm.

Took the next day .... went to my favorite store that I have been dealing with for close to ten years now.

Walked in .... "hey .... you got any 9mm?"  "How much do you want?"  I got a half case ....500 rounds 125 bucks out the door.  So if I would have got it from MaoMart it would have been close to 100 dollars for the 500 rounds plus tax .... plus the time I spent searching around for it, plus the gas I wasted searching around for it.  In the end it cost me 130 PLUS the time I spent looking for ammo PLUS the gas I wasted looking for it.  Had I gone to the fun store first .... it would have been 125 and thats it.

Ok, so someone puts up at 9:45 in the morning ........ C MaoMart has 12 boxes of 9mm ..... you dont see the thread till 12:00 when you are sitting at your desk eating lunch wasting time on ARFCOM..... you leave work at 12:05 and drive to C MaoMart ... and they are now sold out.  You are pissed ... you just wasted your lunch time the gas to get over there the time to walk into the store and find out the the guy ten minutes ago bought the last box they had left .... and the guy before him bought 10 and the guy before that only got 1 box.

I just dont see where a tacked ammo thread is going to be useful OTHER than they would all be in one spot and not littering the entire forum.

So did you buy all 500 rounds (the last of the 9mm) at that gun store? If so, damn you!

I agree an ammo thread isn't going to solve ALL problems, but it has a chance at limiting the calling/driving around to various gun stores in the area each week, if you are looking for something in particular.  At least then, folks could make an educated guess on their 'attempt' to find ammo.

Hell why does the thread have to be limited to ammo?  Just call it the panic buy thread or something.  If you fee so inclined, post about the hard to find items when you see them...  lpk's etc...

I don't think it would need to be something that had to have the 1st post updated, just let folks post rare items they see around town in the thread and let their time/date stamp tell the rest.

I agree it would be nice to keep most of those posts in one place.

However, when I find ammo, it's probably b/c no-one has posted on here about it yet!!!!   Leave the ammo out of the thread

SHIT no 500 rounds wasnt even CLOSE to all they had.  Hell I went back the next week and there were atleast 6 CASES on the shelf of 9mm.

There IS a thread in Team where the good deals and in stock items can be found.

They want to take that V amount of money and put it towards ammo.

Why don't people take V amount and put it in the bank so that they don't HAVE to live paycheck to paycheck. That is of course if V>0.

HAHA! that is funny.

two words: Dave Ramsey

he is my hero.  all my purchases are made with cash or CC with cash paying them off when I get home.  that is of course after I have a fully funded emergency fund sitting in the bank.

Thanks for posting here!  I hardly ever check the ammo forum as much as I should.  I've been looking on Wideners site every coule of days now, since they have been out of stock for about 2 mos.  Still a good price too!

Yeah...I heard rumblings they were getting a big shipment in this week. Guess that's it. Pretty good prices...unfortunately I have some other things more household related to buy, or that Prvi M855 would be on it's way. *sigh*
