| How much ammo of each caliber owned is enough? Now I know as "much as possible" and "never enough" are good answers, but at what point do you think you would feel comfortable and slow down on the purchasing of ammo? |

Hmm.........I hear 1k per weapon tossed around...........maybe 1 to 1.5K per rifle, and 400-500 per handgun, and shotguns........at least .22 is fairly cheap( if you can call it cheap).........1K for a .22 is good as well. I cant afford a metric ton of ammo myself, so I have my stash, then some I shoot

Don't think about it as "caliber" think of it more as loadout. Let's say you have 1k of 5.56. And Let's say you have 5 AR's. 1k equates to roughly 35 mags if you load 28. that is 7 mags per gun. Is that enough for you? Are you stockpiling for all time or planning on arming friends/ family when the zombies strike? Are they good shots or are they going to spray it all away? Pistol ammo is pretty much the same way. Ask yourself these questions and you can figure it out. I figure 10 rifle mags per gun and 10 pistol mags per fighting gun [full size double stack guns, 1911's need more mags.] Basically saying average people can't shoot for shit and will miss a helluva lot more than they hit. All that said I stockpile a lot more that that. Then again I work at a gun shop and saw all this shit coming. |

^^ I agree
I try to buy as much as I can afford / and still keep my fiance. As it stands now I feel like my stash is somewhat short. I have ~5k rounds of various calibers. After I am married I will use the honeymoon period to STOCKPILE. Wish you could register for ammo / guns |

I think it depends on the reason you are stocking up.
If you are stockpiling for a SHTF situation, then 1k per rifle and 500 per handgun is more than enough. You won't be able to carry much more (even that much will require a vehicle- I challenge anyone to carry more than 500 rounds on their person with survival gear and remain just as mobile on their feet), and, let's face it, once stuff starts rolling there will plenty lying around on the ground. All the guys that bought 1,000,000,000 rounds and 500 magazines for their AR but didn't spend a dime on training will get zapped on the first day and provide ammo for a bunch of people. If you are stockpiling for long term storage and supply in the event of a ban or similar situation, then it's as much as you are comfortable buying. |

I have about 2K in rifle, 750 pistol (various calibers) and about 500 for shotgun. For my needs this is more than enough I rarely have a chance now to get out to the range.
I have only enough mags that I can carry on my person and then some. I see that there are people that have hundreds of GI mags but jesus they get heavy fully loaded. If the brown stuff ever hits the fan (which I hope not) I do not want to spend precious time loading stuff from my house to my truck when people are freaking out, then you have another scenario on your hands. If I ever get caught in a situation that 10 mags cannot keep me out of I suppose I am screwed. Everybody (hopefully) has a rally point in which to meet friends that have toys like mine then you can consolidate everything together and put your area on lockdown. If you want to stockpile, fine more power too you. But when you have to move that stuff I hope you have a forklift. Because when these stockpilers have to load everything, I have my BOG, chest rig, rifle, pistol in holster all on in less than 2 minutes and I am out the door. My wife thinks I am nuts for all of this but I tell her along with anyone else, When I die you can say I was crazy but until then call me prepared. |
| figure out how much you actually shoot in a year and then multiply that out for the rest of your life and then divide in half. if you realistically only shoot a few boxes a year several cases will do you as an emergency hoard. if you shoot many cases you probably need to buy components and reload for your emergency stash. |
|
enough to crack the slab your house is built on . I burned over 2k in 2 days at the creek |

My pa-in-law thought I was nuts for buying 1200 rounds of .45 when the CCI Blazer Brass was $11.96 per 50at W-M (picked up a couple boxes a week so the wife wouldn't notice). But I shoot 150 rounds per range trip every 4-6 weeks, so that 1200 rounds will only last 8-11 months. And since it's practically non-existent now at sane prices, it looks like I'm really not nuts after all.
Short answer: at least 1000 rounds for any semi-auto you shoot regularly, but 2K per gun would be better. |

that what you shoot in a normal range session, add 10%, expect to go to the range twice a week for life, add it up and double it
Plan for rest of life so 240rds in a session 264*104*40 1,098,240 rounds in that caliber Do this for each type, once you meet that number tthen your good. |

To quote the old cliche...."tis better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it."
Ammo is like gold, it will never be worth nothing (if properly maintained), and if you end up with more than you need, you can always use it for barter. Figure up what you will need, and double it. I'm not sure why I had every round I owned with me while fishing about 14 miles out in the gulf, but the boat flipped, and all my ammo sank to the bottom. Yep, sure did. |
| I look at it this way, I would like enough ammo not strictly for SHTF although that is my first priority. If it becomes unavailable or restricted, but grandfathered, I'd better have enough on hand to keep my skills up. Ideally I would like to have enough to give my children an opportunity to train and shoot in whatever environment they find themselves whether or not they can purchase ammo. |

I have ~6400 rounds of 115g 9mm's, 1500 147g 9mm's for my suppressor (that with any luck I will have in 4-5 months).
I have 6 Beretta 92's, a CX4 Storm and 56 mags. I have ~2000 rounds of 230g 45ACP. I have 1 1911 and 54 mags. I have 10,000+ 22LR. I have a GSG5 SBR with 10 mags and 2 Beretta 22 kits for my 92's with 6 mags. I have 500 12G shells. I have 2 12G guns. The lowest I want to get to is 2000 rounds for any caliber. If for some reason I got down to 1000 I would probally stop shooting that caliber altogether till I could replinish it. I do have 3000 rounds of 9mm that I am ofloading (I messed up and doubbled an order)
