Well folks, yous truly hit a home run today!
AFQT Percentile Score: 99
Line scores- from 141 to 157.

Breaking stereotypes for heavily  tattooed people everywhere.

I meet with my recruiter again tomorrow to discuss our list of demands, talk about MOS, etc.
Still interested in PsyOps, maybe MI.
Once we figure all that out, get my MOS locked in and hit MEPS.

Excellent scores.  I got a 99 on mine as well, and my recruiter said that he has never seen that before.  When he saw my 146 on the GT, he said 'I didn't know it went that high.'

I got a 99 when I took it before joining the Army.  When my recruiter found out, he tried to talk me into PsyOps.  Must be in good company here in the GA HTF since several of us got 99s.

Nice one!  Glad to hear we're also shattering the stereotypes of Southerners.

So what MOS did you end up going with?

I wanted aviation, so I chose 67H - Observation Aircraft Repairer (translated: OV-1D & RV-1D Mohawk crewchief).  Once the Mohawks were retired in '96, I reclassed into 67T (Blackhawk crewchief).

I keep having a million ideas going through my head about what to do.
I'm trying to figure  a decent balance of cool army stuff and training/skills to allow me some sort of work on the civilian side or active work locally.
I'd love to do homeland security work, drug interdiction, etc.

I go talk to the recruiter in an hour...

You should be able to choose whatever you want with that kind of score.  I scored well too(but not that well),  but was limited due to my red-green colorblindness.    I still had choices like meteorologist, ophthalmologist lab tech,  MI, and such.  They also pulled me aside at BCT to take a language test that I passed and they offered me reassignment to DLI(Defense Language Institute) out in Monterrey, CA.  So what did I do?   I chose 13B(Cannon Crewmember) because it offered the college money for a three year contract and all those good MOS's were 6 year contracts.

The good thing for you is that you're older and wiser.  I'm sure you'll make a wiser choice than I did when I was 18.  Don't get me wrong,  I enjoy artillery and it's in my blood at this point and I'm a very valuable and skilled here.  But if I had it to do over again,  I would've done the  MI thing.

Way to go Frank.  It looks like you're going to be off on the right track in your military endeavors.  Good luck and keep us posted.

PsyOps and all MI MOS slots were closed.
I have a 25S (SatCom) slot held in my name for 7 days.
Talked to a friend in the GA NG who talked to his 2nd LT who now wants to speak to me before I do anything with the reserves.
So, Monday I call the LT to see what he has to say.  Maybe my tattoo waiver request can be reevaluated or something?
The saga continues.
Anyway, in the meantime I'm talking with Beautiful Nurse Hilaryâ„¢(that would be my better half) about deployment and length of schools etc. trying to work it all out.

Go aviation (maintenance, though not Apache since they don't fly with the birds).

While I was in aviation, I was part of 2 J.T.F anti-drug missions and the Blackhawk unit I was in had a regular drug interdiction mission in the Bahamas.  For the cool factor, firing machine guns out of helicopters rocked.  All that plus a good job skill set for when your enlistment is up.

Yeah, you might seem pretty smart but every weekend you will wonder why nobody gives a fuck but you.  Go active duty or you will be stuck with the people who only care about, "wheres my money for college!"  After serving five years active duty Army the Reserves was a fucking joke so was the National Guard after one year in the Reserves!  Don't believe me?   Post here one year from now and we will see how gung ho you are.  Anyways, I applaud you for your ambition to join the military.  Go active duty!

Don't feel too bad.  I know someone who scored well below a 70.  Needless to say, they weren't allowed to enlist.

Are you kidding me?!  When I was at MEPS there were kids who were excited about their mid - 50's. I think to not be allowed to enlist these days you'd have to score below 30.

+1

6 years Infantry, active. 3 enlisted, 3 officer. Just got out and now in the Guard. It's...weird.

When I went in my recruiter didn't know what to do with me...scored a 98 on the ASVAB and told him I wanted infantry and airborne. "But you can have any job you want." Yup...I want to jump out of airplanes and kill people..make it happen ;)  I was tired of being in a cube and watching people fight on TV.

Good luck with whatever you choose...look heavily at going active, though.

But lastly...a NG story from an active perspective. I was 82nd  (2/505) on my first tour in '04. We were replaced by the 81st out of Washington (NG unit). We were sent to Iraq in the first place because this unit had come to Bragg to get certified to deploy...and failed every tasking. When they showed up to replace us...they were too scared (and incompetent) to go outside of the wire. Piss poor leadership, piss poor soldiers. I felt bad for the few that knew what they were doing...those guys ended up losing a couple dozen over the year because they let the bad guys get too close to their FOB and walk arty in on em. Think active duty.

I saw folks score in the mid teens get waivers. They only got a couple jobs to choose from mind you...and generally ended up cooking your eggs ;)

Thanks for all the input guys.  I'm going to talk to the 1st LT from the LRS unit on Monday.
If I can get in that GA NG in that unit then I think I'll be happy.  I think their standards are pretty high.
At this point active duty isn't on the table as an option.
My wife (of 18 years) while a little nervous, is very supportive of my decision to pursue this.
She is very proud of my tenacity to continue trying despite initial refusals of the first 2 recruiters to work with me and the denial of the tattoo waiver for the NG after I found a 3rd who would work with me.
However, she is understandably apprehensive of our transition to a military family.
In the meantime, I'm continuing to work on my 2 mile run time, trying to cut back my caloric intake, and getting in shape for basic.

I must say that after my trip to MEPS to take the ASVAB, I'm not too concerned about my current level of fitness.
There were quite a lot of young men in need of a salad and some fresh air.

The Monk was active duty Marine Corps when we met but was out by the time we married.  The first nearly 7 years of our marriage were not military.  It was a big shift when he went in the Marine Corps Reserves but a good one.  If she has any questions I'll be glad to help if I can.

Make sure that your recruiter or your career counselor at MEPS talks to the units who have the jobs you want before they just tell you it's full.  When I went to sign up (92R, Army Reserves), there were no slots for my job, so they called my unit and had them create one.  I think it was just a matter of putting it into the computer - they did it while I sat there.

That's good to know.
I'm going to talk to the 1st LT in the LRS unit tomorrow.  He seems pretty fired up on getting me that tattoo waiver and in the unit.
That would be my first choice.  Otherwise I tell the reserves recruiter to go find a psyops spot for me.

As a side note, a guy that took the test the same day I did didn't get the 30 he needed.

The tattoo waiver should be fairly easy now a days as long as none of them are racist or would basically piss someone off :) My head medic had sleeves on both arms and around his neck. Outstanding medic and wouldn't have traded him for the world. They're much more lenient with it and like I said...it usually comes down to "Would this piss someone off?" and can it be covered if it would.

Good luck. LRS would definitely probably make you happier for what you're looking for. The guys there will be quite a bit more motivated and you'll probably actually train for drills ;)

None of them are racist, gang related, or offensive.  The problem I ran into when the GA NG denied the waiver was the ones on the side of my neck.  One is a "holy hand grenade" (kinda like a sacred heart with the flames and thorns) and the flames from that go just above the imaginary horizontal line where the bottom of my earlobe is, and on the other side I have a pirate skull w/ crossed saber and blunderbuss.  Both have parts that go in front of the vertical imaginary lines at the back of my ears.

Anyway, I even went through the trouble of getting a police detective friend who does gang investigations to officially inspect all of my tattoos and he wrote a letter (on police letterhead) stating that there was nothing gang related, or subversive, that I wasn't know to do drugs, etc. etc.

I think the waivers seem to be a bit subjective (which is fine, you just have to get the paperwork across the right person's desk I guess) and also I think strength numbers may also affect this as well (if the GA NG is meeting all their numbers then they can chose to be less willing to hand out waivers).

Anyway, when the tattoo waiver for the NG was first submitted I hadn't taken the ASVAB yet (well not since 1987) and I was just some dumbass with a bunch of tattoos wanting to get in the Guard.
Hopefully now, if I get a chance to resubmit the request I'll be a guy who scored a 99, and has a GT of 142 on his ASVAB who also just happens to have a bunch of tattoos.
It's all about how you look at it I suppose.

SO, here I sit waiting for 9am to roll around so I can make the call to the 1st LT and see what we can make happen......   Is it 0900 yet?

I've been at this about 2 months now, so I'm pretty damn determined to get in one way or another.  If this doesn't pan out, then I'll continue to process with the Reserves, but I'll just have to talk to my recruiter and tell him he needs to find a way to get me in an MOS that I want.  Once again, it's about perspective, before I was just some guy trying to get in the military during a shitty economy, now I'm some guy who's proven that he would be an asset.

More later.....
