Just curious if anyone has any plans for firearms training in 2009. I haven't seen many classes offered in Georgia for this year.
I saw some courses by Tactial Response at South River but not much else. Does anyone have any details of upcoming classes in the Atlanta area? I haven't taken a fighting pistol course in about a year so I am due for one soon. I typically need to plan my training schedule a few months in advance due to time and $$. I know Joe has a few things coming up at creekside. I also saw that Ken was trying to get SouthNarc back in town in two weeks but I don't think he had enough interest. It would be nice to have a sticky in the HTF listing training opportunities. |

I plan on taking the following:
*USSA tactical handgun Course *USSA Advanced tactical Handgun Course *Magpul Dynamics Dynamic Handgun 1 and 2 *Magpul Dynamics Hyper Violent Weapon Manipulation and Critical Infrastructure Assault / CQB *Tactical Medicine Course module A and B (if the budget allows for me to take the fall semester) * Vickers tactical Pistol 1, 2, and 3 If I can fit it in the schedule. I'll also take a shotgun course as well as another Carbine course just to keep myself fresh... its year of the Handgun for me... |

It is pretty sad that there have been 100 views of this post and I received only 1 reply and a PM. I guess everyone has all the training they ever need. Too many people spend tons of money on equipment but they never train with it.
KrazyL - are you taking any of these courses in GA or will you be traveling for them? |

Most people on here don't see the value in training. Frankly, they don't know what they don't know (did I get that right Erik and Tod? Or, they think shooting at static targets from a static position counts as "training". I'm not beating up on guys who feel that way. Some folks value proper training and other guys would rather spend the money on another firearm. I would advise those guys who have taken one or two classes to explore other classes with different instructors. You often will learn something from a different perspective. |

eh I'm different. I'd rather be extremely well trained with one AR and an M9 than have 30rifle I just know how to use....
I'll take as many of those courses as I can in GA. But I'm sure I'll have to travel for a good many of them. The Tactical Medicine course is going to be 3 weeks out in CA I know for sure. |

TAP,
USSA in now offering a whole segment of one day courses that focus more on specific techniques in a short training session as opposed to a full 3 day immersion course. I will be scheduling some of these courses locally in the coming months. I will post any course annoucements here, so check back regularly. If you get a chance, check out our website (usshootingacademy.com) and take a look at our 500 series courses. Any course with a 500 prefix number is a one day course. I will be posting some of the course options soon for the GA. HTF guys to look over and see if there is any interest. If you have any other questions about USSA or any local training I do, PM me or call me at your convenience and we can talk about it. Good shooting, USSA-1 703-798-2226 |
| Thanks Erik. I was hoping you would offer some more classes down here in 2009. I am definitely interested in some handgun classes this year. I have the basics down but I need some more intermediate training so I can advance my skill set. 2 day classes aren't out of the question for me, I just need a month or two to work it into my schedule. One day classes are good too but I know it is hard to cover the material in one day classes especially if skill level varies. I'm always looking to learn and I know training never stops. |

Good thread!
Training is very important and too many of us over look training and spend our dollars on new weapons or add-ons. As important as training is, practice is even more critical. Allow me to paraphrase Ken Hackthorne on the importance of training Practice not training is what makes a good shooter. Training is learning new material to practice to improve skill. Train and practice for the real world Plan out your practice Leave the training range a winner! Our priorities for the year 1. SBR purchase (thanks Mark and Allen) for our second AR 2. Training class for Mrs. Monk 3. Training class for our 12 YO son (NRA basic course) 4. Basic Carbine class for me (Creekside Range) 5. Ammo budget for practicing what we have learned 6. .22 pistol or rifle for the kids 7. Parts to build my “I went to Iraq” M4gery 8. Suppressors for our AR’s 9. Optics for our AR’s We may not be able to afford items 6 through 9 but they are on the list I am asking my command to send me to the USMC small arms marksmanship coaching school (AKA Coach’s School) for my 2 weeks AT this year. It is a pretty basic skills course but I get to shoot on our (tax payer’s) dime. Hopefully I can convince the command to spend monies on hiring a trainer for a drill weekend to improve our marksmanship. We need some thing more realistic than the KD (known distance) course The Bald Monk |
| I focused early on in training as much as I could. I took over 30 classes in a 2 1/2 year period. Now I've picked up competition and continue to improve in my skill level. Some folks don't see the benefit of competition as a means of practice but its a fun way to keep the axe sharp. It also drives the fundamentals home. Yeah...its a game...but a game that requires the utmost skill with your handgun, rifle,or shotgun.I've been shooting USPSA competition for 2 1/2 years and just recently made the rank of GrandMaster which was a huge accomplishment for me. My take on training and practice is simple. You get out of it what you put into it. I eat, sleep and breath shooting and self defense. |

Quoted:
Training first and foremost should help develop and test mindset. It should then teach and test tactics. Basic-level training will teach new skills to be used to execute tactics in accordance with the proper mindset. Without mindset, training is just a game. Very well said! I saved that blurb in my training notes. |

While I don't necessarily have a training schedule planned out quite yet, I am planning on taking a few classes this year.
Training is the main reason I started coming to arfcom and the HTF. Last year there were lots of handgun classes being posted periodically, then it tapered off pretty quick and were more carbine classes towards the end of the year. At minimum, this year I want to take 1-2 different handgun classes, carbine class or two (Erik's next AK class for sure), and a medical oriented class as well. Oh, and a sticky would be a great idea to keep all the upcoming training classes in GA in once place. This would really help create awareness about any upcoming classes. After all, you can't take it if you never knew about it. |

going to be 3 weeks out in CA I know for sure. Email sent to you. Email replied to. I find that we all like to train with our carbines because they are what's hi-speed. that's what all the go-fast guys use... In reality we are 90% more likely to have to use our handgun in a force on force situation. It's just that simple. That's why I've switched my training from carbine to handgun this year. |

There was just a thread about trying to get Magpul up here (Savannah area) to do a class. The main obstacle seemed to be money (tuition and ammo cost). http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=8&f=35&t=336443
Hopefully we'll get something going out this way. An obstacle for me is the added expense of travel, hotel, eating out, and potentially taking time off work to attend a class thats a few hours away. Let me know if you guys hear of anything closer to the Savannah area. |
