Can I carry my gun concealed or open in a mall?

I think the answer is yes (assuming you have a GFL).  It may have been DKing or someone else (possibly www.georgiapacking.org) that gave the example of the difference between a sporting event and a mall.  Both have lots of people, but people have gathered for the specific purpose of attending the sporting event, while people gather at the mall without necessarily attending a specific event.

I think that's why church's are in dispute - many people attend services, but others are often at the church during non-service, non-event hours.  Yet churches are specifically denied.

That's my layman's understanding.

That depends :-)

There's an Attorney General opinion that a mall, in and of itself, isn't considered a public gathering.  However, there may be a public gathering AT the mall.

And most malls around Atlanta have signs against guns, so if you open carry, you'll probably be asked to leave, and may be harassed by cops who either don't know or don't care about the law.

Most mall ninjas believe you cannot. You then get arrested for disturbing the peace, have to hire me, get the case dismissed, have to hire John Monroe settle a 1983 out of court recoup your expenditures but not your time or your dignity. Avoid any place in red on this map

If you're carrying concealed then no one will see it.If it is spotted and they ask you to leave then stop shopping and exit.(i am not a lawyer)My understanding of the no weapons signs part of the law is that they can ask you to leave and that is it.You are only guilty of a crime if you stay. How ever if security was over zealous and held you illegally or called the police and lied and violated your rights there could be expenses and court time.
