I went out today to help out a friend zero a Sako 308 and get the dope out to 500yards. I took along my 700 ltr to get the dope for the next Sniper Challenge.
I learned a few things today as well. Here is how it went.
Got there at 9am and set up some paper and steel on the rifle range. drove out to 300 yards. set up for prone shooting, I had no dope on the LTR but is was zeroed at 200yd. looked up the drop dailed it in. 1st shot hit the 12x18 plate low, made the adjustment and hit it again, moved to the 12"circle nailed it ,moved down to an 8" circle nailed it
The sako shot about the same.
Moved back to 400 added the drop and started nailing all the steel again. Then we decided to shoot the paper for a group size. the 26" barrel fine tuned Sako TRG with a Nightforce shot a group of about 2.5" ; The LTR is a 20" barrel with a Mk IV 3x9x40 with a factory trigger it shot a 1.5" group. I was very pleased with the group but I did not like the trigger pull, I'll have that fixed before the sniper shoot.

As we finnished at 400 two others came in. they had Expensive guns and scopes
one guys scope cost more than my whole rig. We all moved to 500 to start shooting. These guys shoot at 500 regularly and shoot clays set on the back stop along with one steel the had. their first shot missed by feet not inches. this went on for several minutes. I offered to spot for them and got them on the steel after several shots.
This guy did not write anything down. I learned the importance of a log book for long range shooting. We got down on the rifles and nailed the steel starting with the large plate and working our way down. The wind was blowing the shots about 4" right and the steel plates we were hitting started to rotate from being hit on the right side. This gave us an optical illusion that the hits were closer to center than they actually were. The small plate is not as easy to hit now. We set up targets in the training pit and moved back to the tree line to shoot the 530 yards that we used in the last sniper match. After addng the dope and confirming our hits we ran through a short sniper stage.
3 steel plates in the training bay at 530 yards and 3 on the rifle range at 500 yards. The goal was to shoot 6 shots in a row witth 6 hits on the different size plates. I went first and nailed all 6 with 1 shot each. I was on cloud 9 when I went 6 for 6. My buddy with the TRG and Nightforce went 5/6. We finnished up and went back to the 500 yd line. the guys with all the cool toys were shooting the dirt bank and not hitting much. I worked with 1 of them who switched to another rifle and got him on the 8" steel plate after about 10 shots. I don't understand how these guys spent thousands of dollars on equipment and could not shoot it very well. I had the least expensive set up on the range and out shot all of them. Any way I really like the Remington LTR and the Leupold MKIV 3x9x40. at 500 yards it kept up with others and when I did my job it out shot them.  The Sako is a fine rifle and the shooter can shoot I guess he just pulled that 1 shot during our little sniper stage.
Wednesdays Creekside is reserved for members to shoot long range.

Joe also told me the sniper challenge is going to have 2 classes  223 and a 308 class.
he should post the info soon. I get the impression he wants the matches to be more skill based than an equipment contest. It will be a little different CHALLENGE come Jan.
See ya'll there

So is the range report to say how the range was and how you did-or to gloat that people with more money than sense sometimes can't shoot?

It sounds like the latter and not he former......

 Yep!

Some people want to throw $$ at the problem which often is mostly a lack of skill.  I also laugh at guys I see shoot who aren't very impressive on most days but, like they say, even a blind squirrel will find a nut.  They’ll luck out and shoot one really good group or hit a small target at a really long distance and then be all full of themselves like they do that all the time.  Anyone can have a lucky day.  Also, we all sometimes will have an off day.  The key is consistency.  Hit the sub-MOA targets most of the times in Creekside wind and I’m impressed.  I won’t laugh at you when you have the occasional off shot.  Hit the golf ball at 500 yards after launching hundreds of rounds at it and I’ll laugh in your face if you try saying that was anything but luck.

I will give it to the guys who were out yesterday though.  Cold and windy and my ass sure wasn’t out there.  At least these guys were getting a little trigger itme.

Because we all know that shooting prone with a bipod is very difficult.

Where is the range report? Is your self esteem so low that you need to post this stuff on a public forum? This is really something.....

They had several guns both suppressed and not.
I was mainly making an observation of the rifles shot that day.
I was impressed the that the accuracy of a stock Rem 700 ltr with a 3x9x40 MK4 was ever bit as good as the Sako TRG factory custom sniper rifle with a nightforce 5-22x50. Both were shot with factory match ammo so that should not have been a factor.
I did not reconize all the rifles the other 2 guys had, 1 was a Ruger m77 and one other looked like a Rem 300 ultra mag. they had 2 other custom guns with cans.
196 clicks is alot my 308 only need about 50 clicks of elevation at 500 yards.

Come on out shoot the Sniper challenge on Jan 10th. we always have a good time and I usually learn a thing or two. It always beats sitting here typing on the forums. even if the weather is bad.

Thank You-I missed the last 2 because of babies and a job change, but you can bet that I'll be at every one I can possibly attend.

I don't know how you guys talk in terms of clicks vs MOA or Mils. It makes my head hurt figuring it out just reading it let alone doing it.....

And if you do that with a .50, you'll have a lot more misses than hits-they have long range potential-but it ain't a laser by any means.

I say in the spirit of "gamership" that we place a shooter/ spotter combo together. Shooter with .5 moa adjustment, and spotter with .25..... let the clicks begin!!!!!

If I could afford a 50 I would atleast make sure I knew how to use it.  I cant afford one but it was a thought.

Plus I dont think that Fro would let me shoot a 50 off of his back like we had to do in the last challenge.

You know DAMN well he would have pod claws on it ... and twist back and forth just a little bit to get them good and set in.

Or of course I could just throw it over your shoulder....... think the blast would leave a mark out of the muzzle break acrossed your face?

It wouldnt just be a 50 either...be some damn hybrid 50 espress, but the barrel would be wore out like the rest of his guns so he prob couldnt hit shit
