I'm coming to you guys because it seems I spend more time in this forum than any of the others. Also I'm looking for a Georgian opinion . I'm looking to buy an optic within the next couple weeks and am deciding between an eotech 512 and an aimpoint comp ml2. I'm aware there has many debates over in the AR forum and it seems the population prefers aimpoint. It also seems that most of what I hear is regarding battery life and problems regarding the lack of protection of eotech lenses. I have shot an aimpoint comp ml3 and my buddy has an eotech 512 that I have not got around to shooting. For price point and MOA in my mind eotech would be the most widely used. Why is aimpoint predominate and what do you guys think?

Not to confuse you but....
I looked thru a leupold  1-3x scope and that thing was nice.I really like the fact that you could adjust the magnification as needed not just 1x and 3x.It allowed me to use both eyes at 1x just like a aimpoint.May not be what you would like i just wanted you to know it is an option.

By the way if you are the kyle that is always getting first place in irons at creekside i am begging you to get a red dot before nov.

I wish I could say that was me but it isn't. I'll look into it, which one in particular are you talking about?

That's my buddy kyle, he doesn't get on arfcom. He doesn't want anyone to jinx him for the Nov match so we don't talk about it too much. He's mad fast with irons though.

Her's some video of him at the last creekside match. VIDEO

Kyle- to actually answer your question if you are looking for speed then the Eotech is faster for me. on a close in target you have the 65 MOA circle to rely on. Ready up your weapon, place the circle on the target, pull trigger. The center dot is important for aiming at distance.

I also run aimpoints and honestly it really depends on the mood I'm in on what I run. On my competition gun I run an accupoint 1.25-4 [awesome at 100 yards] along with an optima 2000 mounted at 1 o'clock [for up close work] on a jp handguard. My 10.5 sports an M3 and my Colt 16" sports an Eotech 553.

Buy'em all.

He is talking about the Leupold Mark 4 CQ/T.  I personally like the EOTech setup better because of the reticle but that is a personal thing.  The EOTech using AA lithium is rated for 1,000 hours of continuous use on normal setting which is 12.  Even if real world use is only half that is still close to 21 days of continuous on.  GG&G makes a lens cover for EOTech.  People say the Aimpoint is more rugged but so is an AK to the AR.  Many of us still pick the AR over an AK and in the end it's the same with an Aimpoint vs EOTech.  It's a personal choice of which you like better and works better for you.

I'm an EOTech guy.

Aimpoints are outstanding sights and I wouldn't hesistate to use one, but EOTech's are my preference.

I want an eotech with the battery life of an aimpoint.

IIR, Eotech now has a model with a bullet drop compensator reticle in it now. Might be something to look at also.

My advice: If you get an eotech get the "AA" battery model.

I like dig the aimpoint. I don't need a tool to take off the repeat zero mount if I ever have to take it off. But you don't have to spend a couple hundred bucks on a mount for the EOTech.

That thing is kind of a turd. It has too many dots to be effective quickly. For me anyway the dots began to blur together and it was hard to tell them apart.

We stocked them for a while, after It took 6 months to sell the last one I only special order them now.

Yeah, the 557 is only useful if you have a magnifier.

I am going to Creekside Saturday AM and have several EOTECHs and an Aimpoint ML3 you can try.

i have the Eotech 552 D1. It's just the 1 MOA dot, no circle. I like it, but I have never tried anything else.... something to think about though.

I just sold my EoTech. It was too busy for me, that whole circle dot thing, especially with an AR front sight in the field of view too. A single dot EoTech would be interesting. I'm leaning toward an Aimpoint but am probably going to old school irons on that particular rifle for a while.

Buy a cheapie at Wal-Mart and play with it for a while. You will quickly learn which one you like w/ out having a major case of buyers remorse.

i've had 3 eotechs crap out on me... I just don't trust the dang things anymore....

I've used and loved Aimpoints... the T1 is great.

My new favorite though is the Trijicon Reflex. line. very nice and best of all... NO BATTERIES

Good suggestion. That's how I realized that I don't like tube-style red dots. I've got an EOTech 552 on a LaRue riser and have no interest in any other optic.

Why did you pick the ML3 over the ML2?  Did you consider both?
10/23/2008 9:47:53 PM EDT

I recommend the trijicon 1.25x4 scope with the amber triangle. When you need speed you keep both eyes open and shoot the triangle. if you need precision slow down close 1 eye and use the tip of the triangle out to 300 yards and the bottom of the triangle past. The varible power is great for longer ranges and you don't need batteries. Since it has a tritium capsule it works good in the dark. I should be at Creekside for the tactical match on Nov 15th if you want a demo.

Do you have a picture of how this sits on your rifle? Also do you use it with a carbine length system?

Just found a great one time buy on the ML3.... this was my first Aimpoint... That is the only reason.
