In case anyone who's IM box is full is wondering. You just got to the probate court in the county you reside in. Fill out an application. Get fingerprinted. They'll send it to you in the mail.

That simple. There's a lot going on in the background there, but that is what YOU have to do.

Respectfully DK, it is not that simple.

To renew mine, it was the same process as the initial application.

You need to bring two separate payments, one was a PMO or a bank check, and the other could be (IIRC) a personal check.

Down to the probate office, fill out the form.

Taking the form to the Sheriff's office and the other money to get printed.

A phone call is worth while, so you have the correct amount  and form of payment with you, as well as noting the hours that they do the fingerprinting.

My wife's took us three hours including the wait time for the fingerprint girl to get back from lunch.

It was that simple for me--in and out in 20 minutes, and the card was in my mail box in 7 days.  Henry County rocks...

Thanks, I mod in AR tech and I get lots of IM's so keeping it clean is sometimes a issue.

Again, many thanks for the info.

Mine n Cobb was like this.  Two moneys - one Postal MO to the GBI and one check to the locals.  Long wait, took forever just to hand me the form.  Took as long to wait for fingerprinting. Finally got done and said, "whew, thank God I won't have to do that again for a few years."  It's why my wife doesn't have hers yet.  We can't find time to spend multiple hours at a court house, what with a new baby and all.

I have heard it has improved, but I'd have to see it to believe it.

They don't "renew" anymore.  I just got another in July and they told me that it's no longer a renewal.  I filled out a questionnaire and paid(seems like it was $24),  they fingerprinted me(again) right there in the probate court office.  I walked out(total time at office about 25 minutes and my wife got her new one at the same time) and got my new GFL in the mail about 8 days later.  That's how it happened for me in Columbia Co.

I'm pretty sure I paid cash in Chatham County.  Was this at your new County or at Chatham?

Well Dking was right, it was that easy, this was the process for me.

1) arrive at Court House
2) Meet the nice person handling the firearms/Marriage lic processing
3) fill out the forms for that person
4) That person took my prints on a digital machine which transmitted them to the GBI
5) Hand over approx 40 dollars

Now, I wait for the mail.

Easier then Texas... I was shocked!

Also, my total time in the office was approx 45-50 mins, but not an hour.

it was a couple years ago now, and they were still requiring the MO... IIRC, I could have paid cash at the courthouse, but they demanded that I have certified funds for the GBI in hand before they would process my paperwork.
I asked the lady why I couldn't pick it up on the way over... "That is our policy.."

My point is that YMMV depending on county.

The nice thing was that as it was a renewal, I was told that my old toter's permit and the receipt would suffice for a current permit until my new one came in.
